🍎 School Lunchroom Safety Starts with Awareness 🥪

For children with food allergies, the school lunchroom can be one of the highest-risk places of the day. The good news? A few simple steps can make a big difference in keeping every child safe.

✅ Wash hands before and after eating.
✅ Clean tables thoroughly to help prevent cross-contact.
✅ Never share food, drinks, or utensils.
✅ Know where emergency medications are located.
✅ Encourage kindness and inclusion for classmates with food allergies.

Parents, students, teachers, and cafeteria staff all play an important role in creating a safe lunch environment. Working together helps children with food allergies enjoy school with greater confidence and peace of mind.

As you prepare for the new school year, review your child’s Food Allergy Action Plan with the school, meet with cafeteria staff, and make sure everyone knows how to recognize and respond to an allergic reaction. Preparation saves lives. (Food Allergy North Texas)

Studies have shown that the OIT process can be done safely and effectively. The number one goal of OIT is safety: to avoid anaphylaxis if the allergic food is accidentally ingested.

By reducing the risk of anaphylaxis, patients and their families experience less fear and anxiety over accidental exposures and gain overall improvement in quality of life (eating at restaurants, enjoying birthday parties, attending school, traveling, etc.).

Don't leave your EpiPen behind when it's hot outside. Exposure to heat in a car can decrease the concentration of epinephrine in auto-injectors.

A recent study showed that after 12 hours epinephrine auto-injectors tested did not show any change in solution appearance and they remained functional. When the solution was analyzed, however, there was significant reduction in concentration of epinephrine, particularly in the auto-injectors placed in the glove compartment and cabin shelf. Start of the new school year is just around the corner. For children with food allergies, school can be a source of both excitement and anxiety. While classrooms offer opportunities for learning and socialization, they can also present serious risks of accidental exposure to allergens.

That’s why having a well-structured Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan in place is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of students with food allergies. Learn more and get started today! foodallergynorthtexas.org
