THIS is WHY we incorporate “humming “ in our weekly GROUP SOUND .
The silence you learned to keep is not just quiet. It is a nervous system still running the emergency protocol of a child who learned that sound was dangerous.
🦋Most people understand the throat as the place where words form. What anatomy has always known - and what neuroscience has now confirmed - is that the throat is something far more significant. The vagus nerve, the primary highway of the parasympathetic nervous system, runs directly through the larynx. Through the very structures that produce vocal sound. Which means every time you speak what is true, every time you hum in the car or sing alone in a room or say the difficult thing that has been sitting in your chest for days - you are not simply expressing yourself. You are directly stimulating the nerve that governs your body's entire capacity to feel safe.
🙌This is not spiritual language. It is anatomy.
Now consider what happened to the child who learned that using their voice produced consequences they could not afford. The scream that was stopped mid-sound. The truth that was edited before it left the mouth. The cry that learned to convert itself into held breath before it became audible. The hum that caught itself because too much sound took up too much space in a household where space was already dangerous. That child did not simply become quiet. They systematically shut down the most natural vagal activation pathway available to a human body. Every time the voice was suppressed, the safety circuit lost one of its primary access points. And over years, over decades, the throat that held what could not be said became chronically tight - not from stress in the conventional sense but from the accumulated compression of a nervous system that learned to survive by cutting off its own regulation tool.
👤The adult carrying that silence is not shy. They are physiologically deprived of their most powerful biological regulation tool.
The voice that stays small in conflict. The throat that closes when truth needs to move through it.
The lump that forms right before the difficult sentence. The high register that appears during a boundary - the nervous system involuntarily returning to the register of a child asking permission rather than an adult stating a fact.
These are not personality traits or social anxiety.
They are the vagus nerve underactivated.
The safety circuit running below capacity because the pathway that should be feeding it was learned shut before the person had a single conscious choice about what their voice was allowed to do.
Here is what this means practically.
🐦⬛When you hum for two minutes with your hand on your chest, you are not doing a relaxation exercise. You are mechanically stimulating the vagus nerve through its most accessible point - the larynx - producing measurable shifts in autonomic tone that slow the heart rate, reduce cortisol, activate the parasympathetic branch that the wound has been holding offline. When you speak a truth that has been sitting in your body unexpressed - even quietly, even alone, even with no audience - you are completing something the child's throat began and was not permitted to finish. You are giving the nervous system access to its own safety mechanism through the door the wound specifically closed.
🗣️The voice is not just how you talk to the world.
It is how your nervous system talks to itself.
And every time you use it - really use it, from the unguarded interior, without the editing that survival installed - you are sending the signal the child's body has been waiting decades to receive.
Not from outside. From the one place the wound cannot reach if you are willing to let the sound exist.
👉Practice right now: place one hand on your chest. Breathe in. As you exhale let the breath become a hum - any pitch, any volume, even barely audible. Feel the vibration under your hand. Do it six times. That vibration is your vagus nerve activating through the exact pathway the wound closed.
🌈And if what just shifted in your body in those six exhales made you wonder what else has been waiting on the other side of the silence - that question is worth following all the way in. There is a complete map. And it goes much deeper than this.
