If your spouse died tomorrow, could you actually find the life insurance policy, or would you be searching through old emails while planning a funeral.
Here's everything your family would actually need, all in one place, before anyone needs it.
Bank accounts. A list of every bank, account type, and account number, not passwords, just enough to know where to look.
Investments and retirement accounts. Brokerages, 401(k)s, IRAs, pensions, annuities, and their account numbers.
Insurance policies. Life, disability, long term care, auto, home. Include policy numbers and which companies hold them.
Bills and monthly expenses. Mortgage or rent, utilities, loans, credit cards, and anything else recurring.
Debts and loans. Mortgages, car loans, student loans, credit cards, personal loans, all in one list.
Income sources. Paychecks, Social Security, pensions, rental income, dividends, and anything else coming in.
Passwords and digital access. How to get into email, financial accounts, and the password manager itself.
Important contacts. Attorney, CPA, financial advisor, insurance agent, employer, and key family members who need to be told.
Legal documents. Will, trust, power of attorney, healthcare directive, and exactly where the originals are stored.
Final wishes and instructions. Funeral preferences, key instructions, and anything else your family should know without having to guess.
Nobody wants to build this list. That's exactly why most families don't have one, and exactly why the ones who do end up grateful they took the afternoon.
