On World Mental Health Day, let’s break the silence and engage in real conversations. Awareness grows when we speak up, listen, and offer compassion.

So thankful to participate in “Coffee and Conversations” at Tougaloo College as we discussed mental health awareness! I was so impressed with Dr. Wiggins and his administration for having stakeholders from every area including mental health AND student leaders!

The conversation was powerful and productive as evidence-based and practical approaches were discussed to engage students surrounding the stigma associated with mental health concerns as well as how to engage students in addressing and seeking mental health support.

Did you know that approximately 5.6% (or about 1 in 18) of people exposed to a potentially traumatic event develop PTSD?

Even if the symptoms do not warrant a diagnosis of PTSD, it does not mean that therapy wouldn’t be helpful.

Training prepares officers to respond to danger. However, it does not make them immune to experiencing traumatic symptoms or grief.

Offer support. Seek help. Everyone benefits. 💙

Key contributing factors include:

* Limited access to outpatient mental health providers, particularly in underserved communities.

* Insurance and financial barriers that delay routine treatment until a crisis occurs.

* Historical mistrust of the healthcare system due to discrimination and inequitable treatment.

* Mental health stigma within some communities, reducing early help-seeking.

* Shortages of culturally responsive and racially diverse mental health professionals.

Men’s mental health month is coming up this November. We don’t talk enough about what men carry. The pressure to be the provider. The strong one. The one that never cracks. But bottling everything up is why men are more likely to die by su***de, because they feel ashamed to speak up. We have to break the stigma 🩵
