ATTENTION! READ IF YOU HAVE MEDICAID!

• Beginning October 2026, new MDHHS Medicaid mental health changes are expected to significantly impact both Medicaid patients and therapists in Michigan.

• Medicaid patients will likely lose much of their ability to freely choose their own therapist.

• MDHHS will require patients to complete new mental health screenings/assessments that determine their assigned “level of care.”

• Based on those results, MDHHS — not the patient — may determine what providers or systems the patient is allowed to receive therapy services through.

• Many patients may be forced to change therapists, even when they already have established therapeutic relationships.

• Therapists are being required to complete extensive additional training requirements (60+ hours in many cases) to administer the new Medicaid-required assessment tools.

• Increased administrative demands, restrictions, and reduced patient/provider autonomy are expected to lead many therapists to discontinue accepting Medicaid insurance plans.

• This is NOT because therapists do not want to work with Medicaid patients.

• Many therapists deeply value serving Medicaid populations, but MDHHS is increasingly determining which Medicaid patients therapists are permitted to see under the new system.

• These changes may lead to:

* Longer waitlists
* Fewer available providers
* Disruptions in continuity of care
* Reduced patient choice in mental health treatment

• Patients deserve transparency about how these upcoming changes may affect their access to care and ability to maintain long-term therapeutic relationships.
