"CPT" is an outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy practice. Suzanne and Stephen Atcavage, both physical therapists, opened their first office at the Forest City location in 1997. Since 1997, the practice has expanded to five locations - Forest City, Hawley, Carbondale, Dunmore, and Honesdale. The practice is inspired by the goal to provide patient-focused care and the use of evidence-based

medicine to ensure the provision of effective, customized care, specific to each client's need. At CPT, the patient is NOT a number. Lymphedema care, sports medicine, Board Certified Hand Therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, concussion management, Parkinson's Disease programs and pelvic floor rehabilitation are among the specialty care services offered. Take a look at Tom’s hands! 👐The deviation noted in his hands is caused by psoriatic arthritis!

👉This type of arthritis affects those individuals who have psoriasis, a skin condition that causes scaly & itchy patches on the skin. Psoriatic arthritis typically worsens over time with flare-ups of symptoms, including pain & inflammation, occurring from time to time.

💥Our recommendation is to strengthen specific muscle groups within the hands & consider splinting to prevent further deformity & drifting of digits.

👍📲One injury that has been especially highlighted in the news is TEXTING THUMB!!

👉This injury is due to repetitive motion, which using your cell phone can cause. Thumb joints aren’t meant to text & swipe all day! 🚨Overuse of thumbs could lead to arthritis in the joints of the thumb or cause new issues with thumb tendons.

🖐️Switch the hand you’re using your phone with frequently, stretch your thumbs (see your local occupational therapist for exercises!), & take a break from your phone to help this condition out!

Lauren Arcury, MS, OTR/L, CHT, CLT, is a 2010 graduate from Misericordia University with a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. We celebrated her last week, Hand Therapy Week, because Lauren achieved the distinction of Certified Hand Therapist in 2018 and has been working in hand therapy ever since. 👏👏

👋Certified hand therapy is a specialized field within the therapy profession focusing on rehabilitating injuries affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. To become a CHT, a clinician must have at least a minimum of 4,000 hours of direct practice in hand therapy and pass a comprehensive examination.

We are so thankful to have Lauren on our team!! 💙

AHHHH! Paraffin baths are a great way to warm up hands prior to stretching & strengthening. It especially feels good for joints that have arthritis, as paraffin is a moist heat which penetrates to the deeper tissues of the hand. 🖐️
