L'Arche Chicago is a community of people with and without disabilities sharing life together in faith

Our community is anchored around three homes on the west side of Chicago and Forest Park. In each home, four adults with disabilities ("core members") share life with assistants who come to stay for a year or more.

🕯️🌎 One L’Arche tradition that began during the pandemic continues today: the annual L’Arche Light Festival! This virtual gathering brings L’Arche communities from around the world together to celebrate our shared mission and connection to one another.

This year’s theme, Sharing Life, Discovering Meaning, speaks to the heart of L’Arche. We’re looking forward to hearing how other communities share life together and finding inspiration in the moments and relationships that connect us across the world.

🎨🖌️ To prepare for tomorrow’s festival, our Chicago community gathered at Saint Joseph House to craft personalized lanterns.

And Jean made it even more fun by showing off her new Halloween costume!

Anders always says, “It’s good to stay busy.” Everyone who knows him knows this is more than a saying; it’s Anders’s rule of life.

Last month, Anders and Molly joined the ILG team in Woodstock to share the group’s new tool, All Voices: A Guide to Supported Speaking and Listening, which helps ensure core members are not only heard but embraced as the guiding voice in community life.

“Anders is living into his seniority on the team. That shows up as him supporting newer members and leaning into his strengths, for example, asking the clarifying questions that help us make our language more accessible for all,” shared Sharon, an ILG leader.

This Saturday, nine volunteers from Pepperdine University Chicago alumni community lived up to their alma mater’s motto. Each showed up joyful and ready to help detail some of our homes’ vans, lay carpet squares, and meal prep.

Johno is kicking off Assistant (DSP) Appreciation Week strong!🥳🧡

This week, we’re feeling extra grateful for our incredible assistants who share their unique gifts with our community in the small moments, like cooking meals with core members, leading craft night, or driving a core member to a doctor’s appointment.

Being an assistant at L’Arche Chicago is about more than providing quality care. It’s about building real relationships and sharing life together.

Johno captured it perfectly when he said, “Thank you for being good friends.”

⛳ 🏌️‍♂️ Despite a rainy start and a couple of delays due to lightning at this year’s Annual L’Arche Golf Classic, we ended up enjoying a wonderful day on the green with so many amazing friends.

Thanks to everyone who participated, this year’s Golf Classic raised over $60,000 for our community. 👏💚

With your support, our community can continue to focus on moments of care, friendship, and belonging that make L’Arche Chicago so special.

Iggy's using his gifts to make his community a better place. 🍎🥕

Each Thursday, Iggy and Camille, an assistant, hop in the Angel House van to head to the Austin Harvest food market. There, they pick up four bags of fresh produce and snacks to deliver to the free food fridge in front of New Jehovah MB Church, fondly remembered as Elbert’s church.

We’re so inspired by the way Camille and Iggy give back to the community surrounding Angel House. 🏡🏫🏢
