L'Arche Chicago

L'Arche Chicago L'Arche Chicago is a community of people with and without disabilities sharing life together in faith

Our community is anchored around three homes on the west side of Chicago and Forest Park. In each home, four adults with disabilities ("core members") share life with assistants who come to stay for a year or more.

It’s been a busy day at the L'Arche Chicago office! We welcomed three new summer interns who will spend the summer sharing life with our core members and experiencing life as assistants.

Adding to the excitement, L'Arche Gdynia Community Leader Marcin made a surprise visit to the office before catching his flight back to Poland. Davey wasted no time chatting with him about his dream of visiting Europe, as well as his knowledge of Polish cuisine (to our shock and amusement, Marcin had never heard of the quintessentially Polish cookie in Chicago, the kolaczki!).🇵🇱

Summer is off to a great start! If you’ve been a L'Arche Chicago summer intern, drop your advice for our new interns in the comments below 👇

No, this isn’t photoshop! Anders and Molly really traveled to Paris and snapped a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower ✈️🇫🇷

The pair traveled to Trosly, France, for the L'Arche Internationale Greater Voices Group meeting, which welcomes members with and without disabilities to work with the International Leadership Team. Anders loved making new friends from L’Arche communities in Zimbabwe, Poland, Germany, Canada, the USA, the UK, and France.

Before heading home, Anders and Molly made the long-awaited visit to Paris and enjoyed lunch at the Eiffel Tower. See more photos and read about their trip here: larchechicago.org/Anders-Visits-France

Anders came home with plenty of stories to share — ask him about his trip in the comments below ⬇️

For months, Annalise, Davey, and Lisa have been planning this year’s trip to the state capitol in Springfield for the They Deserve More advocacy day. Thanks to their hard work, when the big day finally arrived, L’Arche Chicago was ready to make our voices heard! 🚗🏙️

Our two asks to legislators were simple:
📢❗1. We call on legislators to support the Governor’s proposed $0.60/hour Direct Support Professionals (DSP) wage increase.
📢‼️2. We ask for no cuts to services in the “zero-hour” model. The “zero-hour” model funds 24/7 staffing for group homes known as CILAs and maintains DSP service hours throughout the system.

Thank you to House Majority Leader Robyn Gabel for giving Davey and Stephan the opportunity to share personal stories about how our assistants (DSPs) have supported them and helped make their home lives safe, meaningful, and full of dignity.

There’s still time to help amplify our voices. Use this link to contact your legislators: www.theydeservemore.com/take-action/

Inclusion requires intentional and consistent engagement with one another.

Twice a year, we gather for our Town Hall meeting. Together, we reflect on the past six months, celebrate highlights, and collaborate on strategies to strengthen our community while remaining focused on our core values. 🏫🌳

During this spring’s meeting, we gathered in small groups made up of core members, assistants, admin, and board members for mini listening sessions. Everyone had an opportunity to share their perspectives, offer ideas, and collaborate on solutions.

A special shoutout to our incredible board members for their continued commitment to our mission and community. Thank you for sharing updates on our strategic plan and creating space for meaningful collaborative input! 👏

Angel House and Peace House are ready to welcome the summer weather and many barbecues, thanks to our volunteer spring cleaners who spent last Saturday tidying up the homes’ outdoor patios, kitchens, and living spaces. We are so grateful for your help and dedication to our community and core members. Thank you, volunteers!

Let us know if you’ve ever joined a L’Arche Chicago home for a barbecue in the comments! ☀️🌭

During Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’d like to shout out to Ayu. Her caring and calm presence are deeply appreciated at St. Joseph House. 🏡☀️

For the past year, Ayu has spent nearly every Sunday morning at St. Joseph House. Each Sunday, she and Noah prepare for church together, sing songs, and join in prayer. Like many in community, Ayu has a special appreciation for Anders’s seasonal home decorations. With each new festive display, Ayu takes a picture to treasure Anders’s work.

“My overall experience at Saint Joseph House is very comfy, calm, and relaxed- watching TV with core members, having lunch, listening to music, chatting, and just spending time on the sofa. These moments make my weekends special,” shares Ayu.

🙌 Thank you, Ayu, for making Sunday mornings so special for St. Joseph House!

Happy Earth Day! Today, and every day, our community bands together to foster an environment that promotes sustainability, healthy living, and appreciation for our beautiful green planet.

🌳Anders grows fresh vegetables for St. Joseph's House in his garden.

♻️Core members and assistants work together to recycle and compost at each of our four homes.

☀️St. Joseph House has 92 solar panels generating nearly 100% of the home’s electricity use, 33 geothermal wells for heating and cooling, and all-electric appliances, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

🏡Friendship House installed solar panels on their roof, thanks to a grant from the Cook County CDBG!

🪟Angel House is outfitted with all new energy-efficient windows and a full solar panel system, thanks to the City of Chicago's Climate Infrastructure Fund!

💐Our core members enjoy strolling in local parks to savor the fresh air and watch wildlife (Jean particularly loves seeing dogs on her walks).

How are you going to celebrate our green planet today?
