Try this next time you can't focus and your mind is just looping.

Ever notice how your mind can run off without you?

It jumps to tomorrow. It replays yesterday. It gets loud.

Here's a simple way to bring it back. And it only takes about a minute...

I call it the 5-4-3-2-1 Focus Trick.

You count down through your senses.

Go slow. Take a breath after each step.

Step 1: Notice 5 things you can see. Name them quietly. The lamp. The window. The blue pen.

Step 2: Notice 4 things you can feel. Your feet on the floor. Your back on the chair. The air on your hands.

Step 3: Notice 3 things you can hear. Maybe a clock. Maybe traffic. Maybe your own breath.

Step 4: Notice 2 things you can smell. If you can't smell anything, just imagine your two favorite smells.

Step 5: Notice 1 thing you can taste. Coffee. Mint. Or just your mouth.

Why does it work?

Your mind can only put its full attention in one place at a time. When it is busy with your senses, it has no room to run off.

That focused, inward feeling is a light version of what hypnotists call trance.

It's not strange. You enter it every time you get lost in a good book.

Don't wait for a rough day to use it. Practice when things are calm. Then it's ready when you need it.
