I’ve got this covered, NO, we do not always have this! As much as we would like to think we do.

Do our loved ones have what they need to cover (pre-planning) for long-term care? Can we help pay for any or all?
Do they need levels of care? What are their cognitive abilities like? What is their diagnosis? With these types of conditions comes a whole new level of unplanned expense. Things we don’t think about at our age but are in our future. (Eye Opener)
Can they pay privately (social security, pension, retirement, long-term ins) before Medicaid is needed? Who talks about what a spend down plan is, before you get there and need help. What is a spend down plan?
Doing your research, touring homes, talking with the doctor, and with family and friends (that have gone through this). Can help you navigate this new path in life.
Pre-planning cannot be more important in this area. Because when you are left at the last minute it is a stressor none of us need at this time.

We will continue to talk about and breakdown what we can to help you better understand and where to go to navigate through these topics. We do not have all the answers but maybe a little clarity and what important questions to ask.

Respite Care is a much-needed thing, especially if you are caring for someone.
What can you do? Those that work for a caregiving company, when taking care of your loved one, sometime provide some sort of respite care assistance. You can also do a search on the web for Respite Care Services, Homes or Nursing Respite Care and it might help you find the help you need for a short/long term stay. You can also call Medicare to see what they offer if anything, this of course, is if, your loved one is on Medicare. Some Homes/Facilities may have ideas on what to look for, so checking around and asking question could be very helpful in getting some cost or other assistance. You can also check with nursing home companies for ideas.
You need time to rejuvenate and breath! Take advantage of what you can when you can. Your loved one needs you to take time for yourself and you deserve it!

“What does it all mean”

Assisted vs Memory vs Skilled, what is the difference?
In my experience, they are significantly different.

Assisted living is for those that need help with day to day activities but have some independence.

Memory Care is for those that are having issues with memory and need more help for day to day living and need monitoring.

Skilled Care services is by a licensed professional, like a registered nurse. This includes comprehensive medical and rehabilitation services. This comes mostly after a hospitalization.

Which type of home? Not any 1 (one) home is a fix all. What are their abilities? Needs? Diagnosis? Behaviors?
I know we don't want to keep moving. We also don't want them to decline quicker if place in the wrong home.
Most if not all, offer palliative care.

What are your options and what do you look for. Having someplace that can provide for you loved one is amazing but are they really equipped to cover all their needs. Do they have a clear understanding of where your loved one currently is placed on this spectrum?

FYI: 34% of assisted living residents transfer to higher care.
Also: On average, older adults who move to assisted living live slightly longer and experience higher-quality health outcomes than those who remain at home.

We want you to have as much information as possible to create those sunset years as happy and worth living for your loved one and peace of mind for you. We want you to be fully informed and be able to find those questions and answers that you need. There are no bad questions, we want you to come loaded with them, so that we can answer them to the best of our knowledge or point you where you need to be. Being on the same page where your loved one is concerned is our goal. Open communication between doctors, caregivers, and family members is Important and needed to give them the love that they deserve at this time of life. We are their family not by birth but by choice. We know how hard this is for you.

“Level VS Type?”

What are the Levels of care VS Types of Care.

Within each type of care there can be levels of care. (fully mobile, Partially, not, dementia) Such as assisted living homes, do they need assistance taking showers, getting dress, and mobility etc. Are they incontinent?
Let’s start with there is always a basic monthly fee. Then depending on the level of care based off the type of care they need, they will increase the monthly fee. Now some things might be included and those are questions you need to ask.
The depends that your loved one may need is it an additional cost in most places? We are talking the product and assistance to change and manage as needed? When does this cost go up?
Is providing mobility assistance included and at what point do those fees increase (at what level).
Getting your doctor involved, you need to know how the progression of their health is going to stay on top of those additional expenses. Get the family involved they need to know what you are facing and how best to help.
And all homes, of course, are not equal. Most will have their own fee and levels of care chart.
I did a quick search on “Overview of Assisted Living Levels”. It had some great information to help you navigate expectations and understand better.

What does their budget allow? Where can I find alternative funds to assist in the care and supplies they may need?
Let's start with how much income they have coming. What does their Medicare plan look like? Military Options? Can they qualify for Medicaid? What do your Local, State and federal resources offer?
Are you dealing with an in state or out of state placement? Not every state is equal in cost. Where is the family and can they assist?
If in-home care is an option, some states allow for families to provide the care and get paid. Always check into respect care provisions so you can take time to breath when needed.
We will not always make the perfect choice and we can always pivot.
Check in with the doctor to discuss your Loved one's status and abilities. This helps in the right placement.

“That Thing we DO”

Over thinking UGH
When working through the process for putting our loved ones in the care of someone else, this does not mean we go radio silent. We can still be involved OH SO MUCH!
They still need us and our love OH SO MUCH!
In some ways are we better for it and to them.? We can pick our times to be involved when we are at our best to handle come what may. Sometimes stepping back and looking from a distance we can see clearer what they need. We are better equipped to give that they extra love and attention.
On the flipside, some of us, thrive on caring for our loved ones. We were raised and made for this moment. What does your personality type say you can do? Listen to you and plan on this in advance. Talk about it with family before it becomes a tidal wave heading right for you. Remember you may be the oldest child or even the youngest but you are not alone. Turn to those in the know or family to help you with this very important choice.

We are talking about knowing when it is time. Only you can really know when it is time to move your loved one.
Things to think about
Can you focus on them when They need you too?
Is your family onboard with helping you?
Do you have the space for that support equipment that they might need going forward?
Can you afford respite care or bring in home health, when you are ill and need that extra help?
Do you have the proper help so you can take time for yourself to rejuvenate?

What does their current doctor say about their heath and what their needs will be going forward? Is it something you feel you can handle?
Things like oxygen, walker, wheel chair, special bed, special toilet, proper shower place,
ability to walk around without a tracking device or monitor?
So many things that we just do not think about. We know we can give them Quality time!!!

“When do you?”
Thoughtful reflections in 2026

When do you know when to place your loved one in a place that can care for them.
We are all different and it depends on where you are in life. Are you capable of managing life with also managing your loved one’s care? So, many of us do not know how much time and focus it can take. This does not say you are not capable but some of us have more help with siblings and outside help to manage.
I say start with what does the loved one’s benefits offer? Medicare/Medicaid or additional insurance. Maybe talk to friends and family that have been through this process for better clarity. We also have to think about our own physical limitations.
When taking this into consideration talk to some of the local area homes that maybe can help you determine what might be best for your loved one. We are never out of the picture and can always step in and offer help. We are not abandoning our loved one. We are just trying to provide them the best place that we can help them with their best opportunity to live their best life wherever they are. There is so much to be said here and I will touch on this again.
