It has been long understood that children develop language though play. As a Speech Language Pathologist, I use this concept in therapy with many of my kiddos. You will often see me on the floor, pretending and imagining with my youngest clients! Play-based therapy is a highly effective strategy to promote speech and language development along with so many other skills.

Choosing the perfect toy for our kiddos can be a bit overwhelming because there are so many choices. There is always a new toy with more features available, and many of the new toys promise educational benefits. When it comes to choosing toys to help support language development, research shows that less is more and caregiver interaction is the most helpful contributor to language development. Your interaction with your child is better than any toy you can buy!

Choosing toys to help with language development:

Less is more! Minimize the number of toys available at one time.

Traditional toys > electronic

Everyday objects can become toys!

Visually simple toys > visually busy toys

Consider the vocabulary you can use while playing with the toy.

Caregiver interaction > toys
