💙 March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month 💙

Someone you love is counting on you to be here and at Centers for Gastroenterology, we see it every day:
colon cancer often starts with no symptoms at all.
It begins as small polyps that can grow over time, but during a colonoscopy, those can be found and removed before they ever become cancer.
Why screening matters:
Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death
It is also one of the most preventable cancers
It is also highly treatable when caught early.

When should you get screened?
Age 45+ for average risk
Earlier if you have:
Family history of colon cancer
Personal history of polyps or GI conditions
Symptoms like bleeding, weight loss, or bowel changes

Let’s be real:
The prep isn’t anyone’s favorite, and it can take a day or two depending on the plan.
But it’s temporary.
Catching cancer late is a much longer, harder road.
💙 This month, take action:
✔ Schedule your screening colonoscopy
✔ Encourage someone you love to do the same
✔ Don’t wait for symptoms

A simple screening can prevent cancer.
That’s not just awareness, that’s action.
Do it for yourself, and the people that care about you.

When it comes to colon cancer screening, not all tests do the same job.
At-home stool tests like Cologuard can be helpful for some people, but they are screening tools only. They may not prevent cancer.
A colonoscopy does.
Cologuard looks for blood or DNA changes in stool. Because of that, it can produce false positives, which lead to anxiety and follow-up procedures that turn out to be unnecessary. It can also produce false negatives, meaning cancer or advanced polyps can be missed.
Most importantly, Cologuard cannot see or remove polyps. If a result is positive, a colonoscopy is still required.
A screening colonoscopy is different. It allows a physician to directly see the colon and remove precancerous polyps during the same procedure, stopping cancer before it ever has the chance to develop.
That is why colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for colon cancer screening.
At-home tests may detect cancer after it has started.
Colonoscopy helps prevent it altogether.
If you are 45 or older, have a family history, or want the most thorough screening available, talk to your provider about whether a colonoscopy is right for you.
Prevention matters.
Accuracy matters.
Your future matters.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, and screening colonoscopies are the reason why.
A colonoscopy doesn’t just detect cancer.
It can stop it before it ever starts by finding and removing precancerous polyps years before they turn into something dangerous.
If you’re 45 or older, have a family history, or have symptoms you’ve been brushing off, this test can literally be life-saving. And for most people, it’s needed only once every 10 years.
The prep is temporary.
The peace of mind is long-lasting.
And the outcome could change everything.
If you’ve been putting it off, this is your sign.
Talk to your provider. Get screened. Protect your future.
