Hippotherapy: occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology with the help of a horse Why the Horse?

The horse’s walk provides sensory input through movement, which is variable, rhythmic, and repetitive. The resultant movement responses in the patient are similar to human movement patterns of the pelvis while walking. The variability of the horse’s gait enables the therapist to grade the degree of sensory input to the patient, and then utilize this movement in combination with other treatment str

ategies to achieve desired results. Patients respond enthusiastically to this enjoyable experience in a natural setting.

This September, we are excited to try something NEW! ✨🍁💻

For the first time, our Hippotherapy Treatment Principles- Part I A & B webinars will be back-to-back! Over the course of two days, participants in this reformatted webinar will gain an understanding of the principles, history, theory, and research of the application of hippotherapy (skilled equine movement) as a treatment tool within a plan of care (POC) in OT, PT, and SLP practice.

In addition, therapists will observe and analyze a therapy treatment with skilled equine movement and discuss the adaptive responses in the patient. Therapists will be introduced to skilled equine movement and the effect of the horse’s conformation and movement on the systems of the human body for implementation in a POC for a variety of diagnoses and patients.

As a follow up to her 2025 Lunch & Learn presentation, join Jennifer Davis OTR/L, HPCS, CPRCS and AHA, Inc. on October 9th & 10th for “Harnessing Modified Vaulting Movements to Support Reflex Integration.”

📍Geared toward OT, PT, SLP professionals, this course provides an overview of primitive reflexes, their impact on sensory-motor development, postural control, coordination, attention, emotional regulation, and functional participation, as well as therapeutic strategies to support reflex integration through movement-based intervention.

📍The course will emphasize use of modified vaulting movements, rhythmic movement patterns, sensory-motor activities, and therapeutic exercises that can be implemented both on the equine and within clinic-based settings when medical-quality equine movement is unavailable or not clinically appropriate.
