We are pleased to announce that our veterinary team has received both formal approval and the necessary funding from CSU to begin our pioneering research. With owner consent, we are now initiating the surgical implantation of microchips in horses undergoing colic surgery to collect vital gastrointestinal data.

How does the microchip technology work?

These microchips are small, ingestible devices that are implanted in the horses' GI tract. Once implanted, they transmit data on the movement of food, fluids, and other contents through the digestive system. This data helps researchers understand how the GI tract functions and identify potential issues that could lead to colic.

🐎 The Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund is conducting a vital study to address equine colic, which remains the leading cause of death in horses.

🏇 Our research seeks to move beyond traditional observation by gathering objective, internal data to improve outcomes for this condition.

🐴 The core of our current research involves the strategic implantation of specialized microchips during colic surgery. These microchips are utilized for tracking internal data of the GI tract post-implantation, providing researchers with real-time, high-precision insights that were previously unavailable.

Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund is currently supporting research focused on gas colic, the most common type of colic we see in our area.

But equine colic has many forms. I’m sharing this article because it discusses research showing associations between laminitis, EMS, management strategies, and the risk of strangulating lipoma colic — another serious and often devastating type of colic.

This one is personal to us. Many years ago, we lost an older mare to lipoma colic.

The more we understand about the different types of colic, the closer we get to earlier detection, better prevention, and better outcomes for horses.

For the first time, real science is underway to help find the cause and prevention of Equine Colic- but we cannot do it without your help.

Drs. Diana Hassel, Yvette Stephanie Nout-Lomas, Jenn Ruff and Lauren Eileen Smanik have just received approval and funding from Colorado State University and are beginning implantation of microchips in client-owned horses, with owner approval, to study the equine GI tract and advance research into equine colic.

This is not just an idea. This is real science underway.

Thanks to the incredible support of donors, Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund Veterinary Researchers are advancing groundbreaking work to better understand Equine Colic — the number one cause of death in horses.🐴

Our Veterinary Team has received approval and funding from CSU to begin implanting microchips in client-owned horses undergoing colic surgery to help track portions of the equine GI tract — an important step toward understanding the causes of colic and improving outcomes for horses.

This is not a concept on paper.
This is not “someday.”

This science is happening right now.

But there is still more to do.

With continued support, we can help advance the next phase of this important work aimed at earlier detection, improved outcomes, and one day, prevention of Equine Colic.

🐴 Together, we are helping bring answers, hope, and a brighter future to horses and the people who love them.

🐴❤️ A Big Welcome Back Mesa Japanese Thai! ❤️🐴

Not only did they serve us a delicious meal yesterday, but they were also a generous supporter of our recent fundraiser for the Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund, helping us raise support for ongoing, groundbreaking Equine Colic Research at CSU. We are incredibly grateful for local businesses that give back to our community and support efforts to help save horses’ lives. 🐎

If you’re looking for a great meal, please stop by and help support a business that supported us! We’re excited to see them back serving the community again. 🍣🍜❤️

Honor a Horse Lost to Colic with Hope for the Future

Historically when we lost a horse due to colic the attending Veterinarian would make a donation in our horse's name. We would like to invite Veterinarians to consider making a contribution to support the CSU Equine Colic Fund when they lose a horse due to colic.

To help spread the word, horse owners can either share this information with their Veterinarian or discuss the Colic Fund with their Equine Practitioner during their next appointment.

🐴 For the Horses We’ve Lost — and the Ones We Can Still Save 🐴

When we established the Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund, we made a commitment to help fight Equine Colic — the number one killer of horses.

Research takes time. Progress takes perseverance. But thanks to the generosity of caring horse owners, donors, sponsors, veterinarians, and supporters, important progress is happening at Colorado State University Veterinary Hospital.

Groundbreaking research is now underway to better understand Equine Colic and improve outcomes for horses everywhere. With donor support, CSU researchers are advancing studies to help find answers that could one day mean earlier detection, better treatment, and hope for horses and the people who love them.

To everyone who has supported this mission — thank you. ❤️

🐴 For the horses we’ve lost — and the ones we can still save — our commitment remains stronger than ever.
