FDIHB Community Announcement | Increased Rain Brings Increased Mosquito Activity - How to Protect Yourself from Mosquito-Borne Disease 🦟

Increased rain brings increased mosquito activity. West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease most commonly transmitted to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with WNV do not feel sick. Some people develop mild flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, and body aches. A smaller number of people develop severe illness, which can be life-threatening and cause permanent disability.

The risk of severe illness increases with age or if you have a chronic medical condition or weakened immune system due to an underlying health condition or medication.

Currently, there are no licensed vaccines or medications available to prevent or treat WNV in people. The best way people can protect themselves from WNV is to prevent mosquito bites:
▪️ Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent.
▪️ Wear long, loose-fitting shirts and pants.
▪️ Avoid being outside between dusk and dawn.
▪️ Use screens on windows and doors.
▪️ Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Walk around your property and drain or empty items that collect water.

For more information regarding WNV visit: https://www.cdc.gov/west-nile-virus/about/index.html
