So one of my future goals at the Youth Shelter Care of North Central Iowa after our kitchen is completed is to work on getting an addition to have a music room and a sensory room for our clients, as well as expanding our parking area as our mental health side has grown. Finding the grants and donations will be the fun part. Here is one of the many reasons for this goal…

Shampoo? Checked. Conditioner? Checked. Body wash? We are completely out and need your help to restock!

Starting next Monday, July 20, we are completely remodeling our kitchen. While we are so excited for this upgrade, it means our kitchen will be completely closed for the next 6 to 8 weeks (from July 20th through September 14, 2026, with 6 weeks landing on August 31st).

We have a wonderful grant to help offset some of the costs, but we need our amazing community to help us ensure our clients stay well-fed during this downtime!

How you can help:

🍲 Provide a Meal: Sign up via our SignUpGenius link (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F44ADAD23A1FAC43-64798520-provide) to drop off a meal. You can drop off store-bought items, or have food ordered and delivered directly to us! We are preparing meals for 10 to 15 clients, though this number can change daily. Please note: Our SignUpGenius page will be updated 2 weeks at a time!

☀️ Summer Favorites: Since it is summer, our clients love grilled food, easy cold meals to help beat the heat, and remind them of home!

❄️ Cold Storage Available: We do have working refrigerators and freezers on-site to keep ingredients and meals safely cold during this downtime.

🍳 Our Current Setup: We will have a few slow cookers and electric griddles on hand to help make some meals. However, with no actual kitchen, prep work and clean-up will be very difficult due to our limited space to cook food in crockpots/roasters.

💳 Gift Cards & Donations: Financial contributions or grocery gift cards help us buy fresh ingredients & pre-cooked meals.

🍽️ Supplies & Drinks: We need disposable compartment paper plates, plastic cups, plastic silverware, napkins, crockpot liners, roaster liners, food gloves, since we won't have a way to wash dishes and have limited ways to heat up food. Drinks: Gatorade, plastic water bottles, carton milk, and juice.

We were able to take the kiddos to Pizza Ranch for lunch on Friday and it was so awesome watching them eat like they did. A couple of them have never even been to a Pizza Ranch or a buffet as they asked why they had to have a new plate. Makes my ❤️ happy when we can give them something they earn.
