What helps you sleep? I’d argue sleep is the most underappreciated and underrated health and wellness tool. You can have a great diet, exercise, enjoy your work and have good social connections but if you’re not resting and allowing your body to recover appropriately it can affect you dramatically. Americans report their worst sleep in decades. Likely stress, diet, work and electronics related. Women disproportionately suffer, especially in perimenopause and menopause. It’s easy to say prioritize sleep but easier said than done. A strategy I use is twice a week when I put my young children to bed to go to sleep with them. I find it much easier to fall and stay asleep in this “natural“ way. Avoid screens (especially in the bedroom), stop stimulants like caffeine early, and try to keep regular bed and wake times. I find sleep masks to be helpful and light White Noise. What helps you sleep?

Here is what most people get wrong about sleep quality:

More melatonin is not deeper sleep. It is a circadian timing signal. Overdoing it tends to push your body clock further off, not fix it.

Magnesium may help some people, mostly those who are already running low on it. The online hype is bigger than the clinical evidence.

During deep sleep, your brain activates its own waste clearance system. Researchers are actively studying how this connects to long term cognitive health and healthy aging.

And when the basics are not enough, the type of approach matters. Older sleep medications often suppress the deep sleep your brain needs most. A newer class of options works by reducing your brain’s own wake signal instead, which tends to preserve sleep quality better.

I think most of us know there’s no physical health “benefits” from alcohol use. Certainly not if you’re trying to lose weight, sleep better and increase Testosterone. If you’re not drinking to the point of a hangover and able to control your intake, there can be some social benefits. As long as you don’t have a problem it can be argued it’s healthier to have a few drinks with friends vs staying home by yourself isolated. That said the younger generation has considerably decreased their alcohol intake and has been replacing it with healthy alternatives which I think is amazing. As long as you’re socializing that’s the most important part! If you’re having alcohol in the summer make sure you’re staying hydrated, eating and always have some good friends around to keep an eye on you! Enjoy your summer and stay healthy my friends!

It’s called magnesium guys and it’s so good for you! I prefer the glycinate as it’s easier on the stomach.

Benefits include lowering cortisol to reduce stress and improve sleep. Aids and digestion and gut health. Good for muscle recovery and improves blood pressure.

Make sure to speak to your provider before starting any new supplements or medications but this one is pretty well tolerated. There are variations of of magnesium supplements so please reach out to us if you have any questions!
