🕊️August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. According to the National Safety Council, preventable drug overdose deaths increased 58.0%, from 62,172 in 2019 in the previous two years. In 2021, 98,268 people died from preventable drug overdoses – an increase of 781% since 1999.

The IOAD theme for 2023 is “Recognizing those people who go unseen”. This is to bring awareness to individuals in our community who are affected by overdose but go unseen in the crisis. Here are ways to get involved with IOAD 2023 campaign:
1️⃣Host or join an event. Events are a powerful way to remember those lost to overdose, learn more about overdose, or advocate for change. Find events here: https://www.overdoseday.com/events-2023/
2️⃣ Raise awareness and get resources. Educating yourself and sharing messages about overdose and overdose prevention in your community will help bring awareness to this issue. Those that are suffering in silence will feel heard and will be more likely to seek out help. Reach out to loved ones and encourage those who are struggling to seek mental health help, support groups, and resources. Get resources here: https://www.overdoseday.com/campaign-resources/
3️⃣ Remember a lost loved one. Families affected by overdose death face social stigma and often lack support from society. Feelings of anger, helplessness, guilt and shame fester in the families. It is important to acknowledge that it is okay to grieve, and to remember fondly of those that have been lost to overdose. Tributes can be posted for loved ones that have passed away due to drug-overdose here: https://www.overdoseday.com/post-a-tribute/
4️⃣Donate. Make a donation to International Overdose Awareness Day and help raise greater awareness of overdose and spread the message that overdose is preventable. Donate here: https://www.overdoseday.com/donate/

This year, the lives of those who have been affected by overdose will be honored. This includes family and friends grieving the loss of a loved one; workers in healthcare and support services extending strength and compassion; or spontaneous first responders who selflessly assume the role of lifesaver. 💜

💕August 1st is National Girlfriend Day! Not only does this day celebrate romantic love, but also show appreciation for female friends👭. This day presents the opportunity to show appreciation for these platonic female friendships as they are crucial sources of support, understanding, and encouragement🤝.
Such friendships give women an outlet to share their problems, feelings, and thoughts to those they have a close bond with. Women are each other’s emotional support system, and help each other maintain a good mental and emotional health💘. Here are reasons why female friendships are so important:
1️⃣Female friends help fight stress and boost mood. Scientifically, women respond to stress differently than men. Women tend to nurture those around them, and reaching out to other women for support is invaluable to one’s emotional and mental well-being. 👭
2️⃣ Female friends reduce loneliness and isolation. Research shows that close female friendships are more important for women than men. These connections are important to help women to thrive and reduce the feelings of loneliness. Spending time with girlfriends helps reduce feelings of isolation and pressure that the modern world can evoke. 💓
3️⃣Female friends increase our life expectancy. According to UCLA research, women more reliably turn to their social circle when experiencing stress or trauma, which has been noted to protect their health and longevity. 🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♀️🧘🏽‍♀️🧘🏿‍♀️
4️⃣Female friends are relatable. Female friendships provide that safe space if one needs to vent or cry. Women are naturally empathetic and tend to relate to each other when sharing intimate details of their lives. This helps women feel seen, heard, and understood. 👁️👂🫂

Let’s utilize this day to recognize how important female friendships and the bonds are in our lives🌱. Whether it’s spending time with the girlfriend’s in your life, sending them a thoughtful gift or message, today is a day to acknowledge the unity and mutual support of female friendships. 🌸

🌏In light of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, it is important to bring attention to mental health among the American Indian and Alaskan Native community.🌏

Mental health conditions are highly prevalent amongst the American Indian and Alaskan Native populations, including high rate of post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorder, and suicidality compared to other ethnic groups.

History of genocidal practices, cultural assaults, and continuing oppression cause high rates of mental health and substance use disorders. Here are ways to address the mental health challenges that indigenous populations face:
1️⃣ Increase the accessibility of Mental Health Resources. In 1955, the Indian Health Service (IHS) was established to provide health care services to AI/AN tribes that are federally recognized. However, only federal hospitals that IHS funds may provide coverage for health services, but a large majority of these hospitals are located in areas that are geographically isolated. This makes it challenging for individuals in urban areas to seek care, since there are a limited number of IHS-associated facilities.
2️⃣ Recognize and acknowledge cultural differences. When considering culturally appropriate mental health care, it is imperative to understand their cultural views, traditions and practices related to healing and wellness. Several tribal communities have adopted mental health/substance use prevention/intervention programs driven by culture. Some individuals prefer traditional healing and tribal traditions to address substance use and other mental health issues. It is important to seek methods to integrate Indigenous cultural values and traditions into clinical practice.
3️⃣ Continue to research and address these disparities. While the amount of knowledge about indigenous health populations continues to increase, there is still a lot more to learn. As people continue to educate themselves and take action, it is possible that mental health disparities along these populations can be greatly reduced.

It is important that this topic is addressed in order to defeat the stigma that is mental health among Native American communities. 🧠❤️

🌧️🌱July 24th is international self care day! This year, the International Self-Care Day 2023 theme is “Resilience, adaptability, and thriving in adversity”, emphasizing on developing resilience, which can assist one in managing stress, coping with negative emotions, and maintaining physical and mental health. 💆‍♀️💆‍♂️🧠

❓Self care is defined as the process of establishing behaviors to ensure holistic well-being of oneself, to promote health, and actively manage illness when it occurs.
⚡️Self care is important because it helps manage stress, lower risk of illness, and increase energy. 🫂Additionally, self care can boost your self esteem and help you build better relationships.
Self care can be established by taking the time to take care of yourself. This can be done through avoiding stress triggers (taking breaks from the computer and phone), relaxing, engaging in outdoor activities, finding a creative outlet, and more. 🌻🌳🎨

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, here are some additional ways to practice self care:
1️⃣Get up and move! Just 30 minutes of walking every day can help boost your mood and improve your health. 🏋️‍♀️
2️⃣Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated. A balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy and focus throughout the day.🥗💧
3️⃣Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Blue light from devices and screens can make it harder to fall asleep, so reduce blue light exposure from your phone or computer before bedtime.🛌🚫📱
4️⃣Engage in an activity that you enjoy. It is okay to take time off from your busy schedule to have fun and do things that you enjoy.🏊
5️⃣Set goals and priorities. Decide what must get done now and what can wait. Learn to say “no” to new tasks if you start to feel like you’re taking on too much. Try to be mindful of what you have accomplished at the end of the day, not what you have been unable to do.✅
6️⃣Practice gratitude and positivity. Remind yourself daily of things you are grateful for.🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️
7️⃣Spend time with your loved ones. Reach out to your friends or family members who can provide emotional support and practical help.👫

🫧Self care looks different for everyone. It is important that you establish your needs and figure out what you enjoy. While self care is not a cure for mental illness, understanding what causes or triggers your mild symptoms and what coping techniques work for you can help manage your mental health and overall well being.

How do you practice self care?🌱

🌏In honor of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, it's important to shed light on mental health among the Asian population.🌏

In many Asian cultures, mental health is often stigmatized and seen as taboo🧠. Honor and pride is emphasized in Asian families, which is why many individuals will not seek help, as they are afraid of bringing shame to the family. As a result, many Asian Americans may dismiss or deny any symptoms they may be exhibiting. The stigma becomes ingrained into the next generation, causing isolation, extreme pressure, and anxiety. This cycle continues to pass on through the generations🔄. Even when Asian Americans do seek help, a lot of individuals feel unheard, uncomfortable, and invalidated.

It is important to address the topic of mental health in Asian communities. Addressing and normalizing these topics will help break the stigma as well as generational trauma and mental health issues🗣️📢. Here are ways to address the mental health issues that Asian Americans face:
1️⃣Talk to a mental health professional that specializes in the treatment of Asian mental health. Or alternatively, find a mental health professional that is also Asian American. Having a mutual cultural understanding will establish more trust between the individual and the therapist as well as help validate their experience. Seeking help will be a lot more comfortable and productive when a therapist is from the same culture.
2️⃣Find resources in your Native language. Even if an individual speaks English fluently, it can still be difficult to understand something unless it’s translated into their native language. Like the method mentioned above, finding a professional who is from the same culture will make seeking help a lot more comfortable and effective.
3️⃣Understand and Listen. While Asian Americans must take action by actively seeking help, it is imperative that healthcare providers and mental health professionals take a culturally sensitive approach to the needs and beliefs of Asian Americans. For example, using non-stigmatized language — such as “behavioral health professional” instead of “psychotherapist,” may provide comfort to some Asian American individuals. The healthcare system must be more culturally aware, and place greater emphasis on the need for bilingual therapists. To get more Asian Americans to seek care, providers need to recognize that some cultures don’t see mental and physical health as separate. Other, more culturally appropriate avenues for addressing mental health difficulties could include gardening or exercising.

Society must work together in order to eliminate the idea that mental health is not a hardship to endure, but a condition that needs to be treated. It is important that this topic is addressed in order to defeat the stigma that is mental health among Asian American communities. 🧠❤️
