VASECTOMY, TESTOSTERONE & BLOOD CLOTS: SHOULD MEN BE WORRIED?

A patient asked Dr. Thomas O’Connor if he should be worried about blood clots because he was going in for a vasectomy and was told he would be “put out” for the procedure.

Dr. O’Connor’s response was direct: a standard vasectomy is usually an office-based urology procedure, not the type of major surgery that typically raises the same blood clot concerns as abdominal surgery, hip surgery, or major orthopedic reconstruction.

The bigger point is that procedure type matters. A vasectomy, a hernia repair, a shoulder surgery, and a hip replacement are not the same medical risk conversation. When testosterone therapy, surgery, anesthesia, inflammation, recovery time, and clotting risk are involved, men need informed guidance instead of guessing.
