Janice was visiting a hospitalized family member when she fell and began having seizures. The hospital discovered she was also hypoglycemic (low blood sugar), and she was brought down to the ER. Janice required intubation and placement on a mechanical ventilator to support her breathing. She was taken to the ICU and also received a PEG feeding tube.
Janice was transferred to Kindred Hospital South Florida – Ft. Lauderdale for respiratory care and rehabilitation. Janice, who consistently had the support of her husband and other family members at her bedside, received physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and she was weaned to a trach collar and eventually capped. She was able to pass a swallow evaluation and started eating by mouth.
Janice stopped having seizures and did so well that she was transferred to Kindred’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit after 10 days. “Thank you to all the therapy staff.”
Janice spent another 15 days in the ARU, where she was decannulated and had her PEG tube removed. She progressed physically to walking with a walker and needing only partial assistance with tasks. After 25 days of care, Janice was discharged home with home health.
