Deaf+ or +Deaf?
The distinction matters.

Have you ever wondered what the plus sign represents when discussing Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals with additional disabilities?

In this reel, Mariann breaks down the difference between Deaf+ and +Deaf, two terms that reflect different ways of understanding an individual's disabilities and support needs.

🤟 Deaf+ refers to individuals whose primary disability is Deafness, with additional disabilities.

💬 +Deaf refers to individuals whose primary disability is something other than Deafness, with Deafness as an additional disability.

Why does this distinction matter? Because understanding an individual's unique profile helps us move beyond labels and consider the whole person... their communication, access, strengths, and individualized support needs. 🧡

🪶 Teacher of the Deaf. Educational Interpreter. Language Facilitator.
What’s the difference?

Supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing students is a team effort, but not every role serves the same purpose. 🧡

🍎 Teacher of the Deaf (TOD): Supports students’ educational, language, communication, and learning needs through specialized instruction.

🤟 Educational Interpreter (EI): Facilitates communication access between students, educators, and peers so students can engage in the educational environment.

💬 Language Facilitator (LF): Supports students’ language development and access to communication through individualized language facilitation, based on their needs and educational plan.

While these professionals may work alongside one another, their roles are distinct. Understanding those differences helps build stronger, more collaborative support for every student.

✨ Because meaningful access doesn't happen by accident. It takes the right support, collaboration, and a shared commitment to student success.
