PTSD can result from a complex layering of many circumstances. Sometimes, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder can result from a single event that is especially shocking or horrifying. But more often, symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder are a combination of multiple factors that have piled up in a person’s life. It’s almost like a death by a thousand paper cuts at times.

Complex trauma can result from an abusive relationship, betrayal, being excluded, ongoing systemic abuse such as from a legal system or medical involvement, financial scarcity and more.

I understand the complexities and multifaceted aspects of trauma. If you believe you’re experiencing trauma symptoms, let’s talk about your story. I understand patterns and connections that can result in symptoms that are hard to define. Recovery is possible. 💜

It’s all pretty simple really. Just remember who you are at your core and highlight your beauty.

Regardless of the challenges of our human existence, with twisted narratives, complex relationships, heartache, abuse of power, health challenges, burnout, or whatever it is you are finding overwhelming in your life…. Just remember who you really are at your core. That will keep you on your path for healing.

Healing from trauma is not about becoming someone new. It is about protecting, returning to and rediscovering who we have always been.

Focus on joy and love. Uphold your personal integrity. Lean into accountability. Be kind towards others. Stand up for yourself. Do the right thing. Respect yourself and others.

Knowing who you really are, deep inside, will help you navigate any storm. Protect your light.

Ask for help and support if needed.

Ah, the beach. The ocean. The wind. The salt water. There’s no better place to find peace and tranquility than at the beach. We here in Southwest Florida are so very lucky! ☀️🌊🌴

The horizon line of the ocean is one of my favorite places to utilize Brainspotting. Brainspotting is a specific therapeutic technique that can help you to integrate and process trauma through the movement of your eyes. Following the line of the horizon is an excellent way to integrate your subconscious mind and your somatic body.

If you’re curious about this technique, book an appointment with me. Will hold space for you so that you can process your own trauma and I will teach you how you can utilize this powerful technique for yourself anytime you like. 💜

Abundance shows up for me in so many ways.

Once you flip your story, your victimization, your challenges and struggles, your injustice and heartbreak, you see abundance everywhere. Joy.

The opposite of trauma is JOY. Experiencing joy and happiness. Every day is an active resistance and resilience.

It’s so easy to get stuck in healing cycles. We talk a lot about it and it is certainly healthy and needed. And it does take time to process trauma that’s been experienced. Betrayal wounding, childhood abuse, relationship trauma, medical trauma, legal or institutional trauma…. It all takes time to integrate and recover.

But please remember… At any time, you can be absolutely delighted by something. You can experience sheer joy.

For me, every year in Southwest Florida in July, I am delighted by mangoes. It’s like a cosmic reset. It reminds me that nature provides. It reminds me of the lifecycle. It reminds me of growth. It reminds me of the benefits of earth, energy, and sunshine. It takes me to a place of great appreciation for planting seeds, growing, blooming, and harvesting the fruits of your efforts. It takes me on a walk down memory lane to review my life and growth since last mango season.

Now that the mangoes are here, I remember that all is well. It always was. But these little golden orbs of deliciousness really anchor the deep knowing that is necessary to harvest joy.

For bonus joy, eat them in the ocean. Eat them in the shower. Eat them in your garden. Share them with your friends. Bite the peel and rip them apart with your fingers. Dance and eat mangoes. Put them in smoothies. Eat them for breakfast. Eat them for lunch. Eat them for dessert. Being inspired by their colors and paint something. Freeze them so you can have a joyful treat during the dark times. Thank the squirrels for leaving a few for us to enjoy.

What is the simple pleasure or detail or event that brings you great delight and joy… no matter what?

💚 As PTSD Awareness Month closes, there’s one thing I hope you’ll remember.

Healing is possible.

After more than 30 years as a trauma therapist, I’ve learned that people are incredibly resilient.

Trauma may change the brain. Trauma may change the body. But trauma does not have to define your future.

My work isn’t just about helping people understand what happened. It’s about helping them reconnect with themselves.
Helping them feel safe again. Helping them move beyond survival. Helping them discover joy, purpose, and a life that feels like their own.

Thank you for following along this month.
If even one post helped you better understand trauma—or reminded you that hope still exists—then this month has been worthwhile.

Your story is still being written. Joy and healing are always possible. 💚

💚 June is PTSD Awareness Month 💚

Not all trauma happens in a single moment.

Sometimes it happens slowly over time… inside a relationship. Friendships, dating relationships, marriage, family and communities all count as relationships.

Relationship trauma is not a “communication problem” or a “relationship problem. Chronic patterns of abuse inside of any relationship can fundamentally alter the way that your brain and nervous system function.

Betrayal.
Emotional abuse.
Coercive control.
Silent treatment.
Verbal abuse.
Financial abuse.
Sexual abuse.
Psychological manipulation.
Physical violence.

When the nervous system is exposed to ongoing fear, uncertainty, or control, it adapts to survive by accommodating, ignoring, justifying or over achieving.

That’s why healing can be so difficult while the trauma is still happening within the relationship.

The goal of recovering from relationship abuse isn’t to “be stronger.” If you have endured abusive behavior, you are already plenty strong.

The goal is to become safe enough for your brain and body to begin get out of survival mode and hyper vigilance so healing can begin.

Recovery takes time.

But with safety, trauma-informed support, and compassionate care, it is absolutely possible.

You are more than what happened to you. You are capable of healing, growing, and creating a life beyond survival. 💚

💚 June is PTSD Awareness Month 💚

Trauma doesn’t always come from criminals, strangers or war.

Sometimes the deepest hurt doesn’t come from the trauma itself. It can come from experiences involving systems and professionals that were meant to provide protection and help.

Interactions involving law enforcement, courts, legal proceedings, custody disputes, false accusations, wrongful arrests, intimidation, coercive control, or feeling powerless within complex systems can leave lasting emotional wounds.

Symptoms may include:

• Hypervigilance and fear
• Sleep difficulties and intrusive memories
• Loss of trust in institutions and authority figures
• Anxiety, panic, and emotional distress
• Shame, isolation, and helplessness

Most professionals enter helping fields with a sincere desire to serve. But when trauma is misunderstood, when coercive control is not recognized, or when people feel dismissed, blamed, or unheard, the effects can be profound.

This is why trauma-informed education matters—not only for mental health professionals, but also for healthcare providers, attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers, educators, clergy, and communities.

People deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Healing is possible.

💚 June is PTSD Awareness Month 💚

When people think about PTSD, they often think about combat or natural disasters. But PTSD can also result from medical trauma.

Serious illness, emergency procedures, chronic pain, frightening diagnoses, misdiagnosis, invasive treatments, botched surgeries, difficult childbirth experiences, or feeling unheard and dismissed by healthcare professionals can leave lasting emotional wounds.

For some individuals, the trauma is not only what happened medically.

It is how they were treated.

Feeling powerless, not being believed, losing trust in one’s body, misdiagnosis or experiencing a lack of compassion and respect can profoundly affect a person’s sense of safety.

Symptoms may include:

• Anxiety and hypervigilance
• Intrusive memories or nightmares
• Avoidance of medical appointments
• Panic and fear surrounding places or procedures
• Difficulty trusting healthcare professionals
• Feelings of helplessness or betrayal

The good news is that healing is possible.

Trauma-informed care reminds us that medicine is not just about treating bodies—it is also about preserving dignity, trust, communication, and humanity.

Healthcare professionals save lives every day. And when care is combined with compassion, listening, and respect, healing can occur on multiple levels.

If your medical experiences have left emotional scars, please know this:

Your symptoms make sense.
Your experience matters.
And trauma informed support is available.

☀️ Happy Summer Solstice ☀️

For thousands of years, people across cultures have honored the summer solstice—the longest day of the year and a celebration of light, growth, and the rhythms of nature.

This isn’t necessarily a day for striving or manifesting more. Instead, perhaps it is a day to pause and appreciate.

🌻 Notice how far you’ve come.
🌿 Reflect on the seeds you’ve already planted.
☀️ Recognize what is growing, even if it isn’t fully visible yet.
💛 Celebrate the strength that carried you through darker seasons.
✨ Allow yourself to shine without apology.

Nature doesn’t rush the garden. Noticing growth and effort it’s just as important as planting seeds.

Take a walk in the sunshine. Sit quietly. Journal. Share a meal. Light a candle. Create something beautiful. Express gratitude for what has unfolded and what continues to bloom.

The longest day of the year reminds us that life moves in seasons.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply acknowledge progress.

Look how far you have come. Look what is already growing. Stay strong and know what is true.

May you honor your light, trust your timing, and fully embrace the beauty of this season. May you shine brightly regardless of circumstances.

☀️ Happy Summer Solstice. ☀️
