Dear Patients and Friends,

I am excited to announce that effective June 1, 2020; I will be joining Premier Women’s Care of Southwest Florida.

Over the years, I have worked with many of their physicians and entrusted them with my obstetric patients. Rest assured, you will still receive the same great care and timely responses you have come to expect over the years.

With this change, I will have even more accessible hours for appointments. As part of the group I will offer telemedicine visits, in-office mammography and online scheduling to save you valuable time. Your medical records will easily transfer for continuity of care.

The office is conveniently located nearby at 9021 Park Royal Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33908. The new office phone number is (239) 432-5858. The direct number to schedule an appointment is (239) 256-1446. The new website will be www.pwcswfl.com.

I look forward to seeing you at the new office.

We have added Telehealth today using ZOOM, with audio/video conferencing, to solve issues not necessarily requiring an exam.

Due to Corona virus pandemic we have limited office hours. We are available in office for urgent issues such as abnormal bleeding, breast masses, abscesses, post menopausal bleeding, urinary tract infections, or vaginal infections not responding to standard treatments. Our goal is to keep you out of urgent care center or emergency room.

Please use our web portal to directly contact me swfobgyn.com

Stay well,
Richard D Murray, MD

September is Ovarian Cancer awareness month

This year, we honored my sister-in-law Shannon McNeilI, when we walked in the ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE CURE walk-a-thon in St. Petersburg,Fl.
Shannon fought this cancer for ten years and she truly believed in some day having a cure. For now, early detection is important and being aware of the signs and symptoms.

Below are some signs to be aware of with ovarian cancer. If you have any of these symptoms and would like to come in and get checked out, please call to make an appointment, 239-275-4300.

Early-stage ovarian cancer rarely causes any symptoms. Advanced-stage ovarian cancer may cause few and nonspecific symptoms that are often mistaken for more common benign conditions.

Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:

Abdominal bloating or swelling
Quickly feeling full when eating
Weight loss
Discomfort in the pelvis area
Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
A frequent need to urinate

When to see a doctor:

Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you.

If you have a family history of ovarian cancer or breast cancer, talk to your doctor about your risk of ovarian cancer and Brca testing.

More women should be assessed for harmful mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that can increase risk of certain cancers, according to new recommendations.
Previously, it was recommended for women who have a family history of breast, ovarian, tubal or peritoneal cancer to be assessed for harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.
Now the USPSTF is updating its recommendation for this risk assessment to include women who personally have been diagnosed with breast, ovarian or tubal cancer in the past but completed treatment and are considered "cancer free," and those who have certain ancestries associated with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, such as being of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.

Women with positive results on the primary care risk assessment are then recommended to receive genetic counseling and possibly genetic testing for the mutations.

We offer the simple saliva test in the office, which is now affordable. Call 239-275-4300 to set up an appointment.
