September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.
At SalusCare, we know that su***de prevention begins long before a crisis. It starts with connection. A conversation. A check-in. A willingness to listen without judgment.
Too often, people struggle in silence, believing they have to face their challenges alone. This month, we want to remind our community that help is available, hope is real, and reaching out is a sign of strength. National organizations including SAMHSA, NAMI, and the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline emphasize that connection and open conversation are among the most powerful tools we have in preventing su***de and supporting mental wellness.
Here in Lee County, the need is significant. Internal SalusCare community education materials note that Lee County's su***de rate exceeds the Florida average, reinforcing the importance of accessible behavioral healthcare and community awareness.
As behavioral health professionals, community partners, family members, friends, and neighbors, each of us has a role to play. Sometimes the most important question we can ask is simply:
"How are you, really?"
This September, we encourage everyone to:
π Check in on someone you care about.
π Learn the warning signs of emotional distress.
π Reach out if you are struggling.
π Share resources that could help save a life.
If you or someone you know needs support, call or text 988, the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
Together, we can reduce stigma, strengthen connection, and remind those who are hurting that they are not alone.
