Hendry Regional Medical Center is closing the rural stroke gap and redefining critical access care for their community.

In 2023, the team partnered with TeleSpecialists to build a structured teleneurology program.

The results:
⬩ Door-to-needle times fell 43% in the first year.
⬩ The GWTG-Stroke composite score rose from 74.9% to 95.1%.
⬩ Stroke admissions grew from zero in 2022 to six in 2025.
⬩ Joint Commission Acute Stroke Ready certification

With the right specialist access, a rural hospital can deliver the same standard of stroke care as a major medical center, and keep patients close to home.

Forty-four specialists joined the TeleSpecialists network this year.

That number says less about recruiting and more about the physician-owned, physician-led model that experienced neurologists and psychiatrists are choosing.

Neurologists describe the practice from the inside—genuine flexibility—and more of the work they trained for with less of what tends to accumulate around it.

The full picture, including what 641 monthly thrombolytics and 19 percent year-over-year growth look like in practice, is broken down in the blog. Read it here: https://bit.ly/4vLMZMT

A physician network now exceeding 200 specialists and growing significantly.

That pace of growth reflects something specific—physicians choosing to practice where clinical volume, flexibility, and infrastructure align. Practice under the TeleSpecialists physician-owned, physician-led model: https://bit.ly/43gvecf

"Compassion, understanding, and reassurance is the best medicine." Those are the moving words of Bryan Aycoth, stroke survivor.

He initially reached for a glass of sweet tea and knew something was wrong.

Within minutes of arriving at the ER, a board-certified neurologist with TeleSpecialists was on screen reviewing his CAT scan in real time, explaining his options, and helping him make the decision that changed his outcome.

What stayed with him most was not the technology—it was the quality of care. That combination is what TeleSpecialists brings to every consultation.

Racial and ethnic disparities in stroke care are well-documented.

A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare analyzed more than 13,000 acute TeleStroke consultations across 203 facilities in 23 states.

The findings: no statistically significant differences in thrombolytic treatment rates or door-to-needle times by race or ethnicity.

The study suggests when every patient reaches a neurologist on screen, without prescreening barriers, care variability decreases.

Of the 795,000 Americans who will have a stroke, 23% will suffer from a second one.

This is preventable by staying vigilant of signs following the first stroke.

Clinical outcomes are shaped by decisions made in the first few minutes.

Some data points are just numbers. Others stop you mid-sentence.

DeSoto Memorial Hospital went from transferring 98% of stroke patients for higher-level care in 2021 to only 5% today.

That is what happens when specialist access reaches the patients who need it most, regardless of their zip code. TeleSpecialists is proud to stand alongside what DeSoto Memorial has built for their community.
