Understanding the Stages of Dementia 🧠💙
One of the first questions families ask is, “What stage is my loved one in?” While staging can help guide care, it is important to remember that every person experiences dementia differently. No two journeys are exactly alike.
The FAST Scale focuses on how dementia affects a person’s ability to function in everyday life. Early on, changes may be so subtle that only the individual notices them. Over time, tasks like managing finances, cooking, driving, dressing, bathing, and eventually communicating may become more difficult.
But there is something no chart can measure.
It cannot measure the comfort of holding a loved one’s hand.
It cannot measure the peace that comes from hearing a familiar voice.
It cannot measure the joy of a favorite song, a warm hug, or a smile shared between two people.
As dementia progresses, our goal shifts from helping someone remember to helping them feel safe, understood, respected, and loved.
Remember, this scale was developed primarily for Alzheimer’s disease. Other forms of dementia, such as Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and vascular dementia, may progress very differently.
Every stage has value.
Every stage deserves compassion.
Every person deserves dignity.
