🌿 Foodie Friday: Food Teethers (Resistive Foods)

Did you know babies can practice chewing before they’re ready to take bites?

Resistive foods (sometimes called food teethers) are large pieces of whole foods that are too big to bite off but perfect for exploring with the mouth.

As babies mouth, bite, and chew on these foods, they’re practicing important skills like:

🌱 Jaw strength
🌱 Tongue movement
🌱 Oral mapping
🌱 Learning how food feels
🌱 Building confidence with new textures

These foods are meant for exploration—not nutrition. They help build the foundation for chewing more challenging foods later on.

✨ Treehouse Tip: Resistive foods should always be offered with close supervision and only when your child is developmentally ready (such as sitting independently and bringing food to their mouth). Remove the food if pieces begin to break away.

Every child develops at their own pace. We follow readiness—not just age.

🌿 What’s Next After Purées?

Some babies zoom through textures. Others need a slower, steadier climb. Both paths are okay.

Once your little one is comfortable with smooth purées, one gentle next step may be introducing a slightly thicker purée or soft mashable food. For some babies, this gradual progression supports oral motor learning, sensory exploration, and confidence before more challenging textures.

Your baby may be ready when you notice:

✔️ Managing smooth purées comfortably

✔️ More active tongue movement during meals

✔️ Reaching for the spoon or showing interest in self-feeding

🌿 Treehouse Tip

A small, flat baby spoon—such as a NumNum® spoon—allows your child to help remove the food from the spoon themselves. For many babies, this can feel more comfortable than a larger spoon placed farther into the mouth.

Every child develops at their own pace. Some little ones are ready to explore appropriate finger foods sooner, while others benefit from a more gradual progression. There isn’t just one right path—our goal is to follow each child’s readiness and help them become safe, confident eaters.

💚 Small flat baby spoon option linked in the comments.

🌳Tummy time doesn’t have to happen only on the floor.

If your baby isn’t loving traditional tummy time, that’s okay. There are many ways to build the same important skills while helping your little one feel safe, supported, and successful.

Try:
🤍 Across your legs for gentle support
🤍 Over a rolled towel to encourage lifting and looking
🤍 On your chest for connection, comfort, and strength-building together

Remember, tummy time is about quality, not perfection. Even a few minutes here and there throughout the day can make a big difference as your baby builds head control, shoulder strength, and the foundations for rolling, crawling, and play.

Every baby develops at their own pace, and sometimes a small change in position is all it takes to make tummy time more enjoyable.

A gentle weekend reminder…

Some seasons feel calm. Others feel overwhelming.

As parents, it’s easy to focus on what’s happening above the surface—milestones, achievements, progress, and the next big step.

But so much of a child’s growth happens where we can’t always see it.

Every shared meal. Every bedtime story. Every walk outside. Every hug. Every conversation. Every moment of connection.

These are the roots.

They may not stop life’s storms, but they help children—and the families who love them—weather them.

Wishing you a peaceful weekend filled with the little moments that help strong roots grow. 🤍🌳

🌿 Foodie Friday

One of the most common questions parents ask us is…

“Is it okay to start with purees?”

Absolutely.

When your baby is showing signs of readiness—including supported sitting with good head control, interest in food, and bringing their hands or toys to their mouth—smooth purees can be a wonderful first texture.

One thing I love to remind parents is that purees aren’t just “baby food.” They’re a normal texture that we continue to enjoy throughout life. Think yogurt, mashed potatoes, hummus, applesauce, smoothies, creamy soups… and many condiments and dips, like ketchup, are pureed or puree-like textures that we enjoy every day.

🌿 Purees deserve a place at the table.

They provide babies with an opportunity to:
• Practice moving food around the mouth
• Practice swallowing safely
• Explore new flavors and sensations
• Build confidence with eating

For many babies, smooth purees can also provide a gentle introduction to the sensory experience of eating. Every new texture asks the brain and body to learn something new. As babies grow, we want their textures to grow, too.

✨ Looking for an iron-rich puree to try? Whipped bone marrow is one nutrient-rich pureed option that some families choose to offer as part of their baby’s feeding journey.

At Treehouse, we believe in choosing the right texture for the right child at the right time.

That’s why we often say:

🌿 Smooth textures are a starting place—not a staying place.

Because every texture serves a purpose.

🤍 Ages guide us. Readiness leads us.

🌿 Follow along each Foodie Friday as we answer your most common feeding questions and help grow confident eaters—one gentle step at a time.

🌿 Growing confidence with repetition:

You do not have to provide a brand-new activity every day.

While introducing new experiences is an important part of learning, familiarity has its own kind of magic.

When children return to a favorite activity, they aren’t “just doing it again.”

They’re noticing new details…
Trying a different strategy…
Building stronger skills…
And discovering what they’re capable of.

Repeating familiar activities gives children the opportunity to practice, problem-solve, and build confidence. Children often benefit from revisiting the same play experience several times. What may look repetitive to us is actually helping them build familiarity, strengthen skills, remember what worked, and become more confident.

Repetition is not a lack of creativity. It is part of learning.

So bring the water cups back out.

Read the same favorite book.

Repeat the same song.

Let them paint again.

Sometimes the deepest learning happens the second, third, or even tenth time.

🌱 Little repetitions often lead to big growth.

In our busy, screen-filled world, sometimes the most powerful “therapy” is the simplest: kicking off shoes and letting little feet connect directly with the earth on our beautiful Emerald Coast beaches.🌊
A quick barefoot walk in the sand offers layered benefits that support development from the ground up.

Why we love barefoot beach walks at Treehouse:

🏖️ Strengthens little feet
Walking on uneven sand challenges the small muscles of the feet and ankles while building balance and stability.

🦵 Builds gross motor skills
Soft sand naturally makes children work harder, helping develop leg strength, core stability, and coordination.

🦶 Grounding & Regulation — Direct contact with the sand allows the body to absorb the Earth’s natural electrons. Research suggests this can help shift the nervous system toward calm (parasympathetic activation), reduce stress markers like cortisol, and support better emotional regulation and sleep. Even 5–15 minutes can feel like a reset after a busy day

🐚 Sensory Play + Connection Time — Turn it into a seashell treasure hunt! This encourages fine motor skills, curiosity, and those precious moments of co-regulation with you. Nature provides rich, varied sensory input that supports self-regulation in a low-pressure way.

☀️Pro tip for our hot Florida summers: Aim for early morning or golden hour when the sand is cooler. Wet sand near the water’s edge is often ideal—firmer, cooler, and great for grounding. Keep sessions short, stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and supervise closely for safe shell exploring.

🌿 Did You Know?

Parents often think rolling is simply another milestone to check off the list—but it’s so much more.

When babies learn to roll, they’re developing the trunk strength, weight shifting, and body awareness that prepare them for sitting, crawling, and eventually walking.

Development is beautifully connected. Each skill builds on the one before it.

Every small milestone is helping lay the foundation for the next.

💚 Every child grows at their own pace. If you have concerns about your child’s development, our physical therapy team is here to help.
