Is my child old enough for VPK or kindergarten… or are they ready?

Those might sound like the same question.

But this fall, we’ve helped families at Kith&Kin ABA navigate both, and we wanted to share an important reminder:

They’re not quite the same thing.

Children don’t all grow at the same pace. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s part of what makes them wonderfully, uniquely themselves.

For some children diagnosed with autism, another year can offer valuable time to continue building communication, regulation, flexibility, independence, and social-emotional skills.

For others, they’re ready now! Ready to take that next step, meet new friends, and discover what the next chapter has in store.

So how do you know?

There isn’t one right answer for every child. But there can be an intentional answer for each child and family.

And that’s what we’re after.

The goal isn’t simply to start school when the calendar says it’s time. It’s to help each child step into their next chapter with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive.

We’re not pro-delay or pro-starting-early. We’re pro-understanding your child.

Because sometimes the best next step is to wait, and sometimes it’s to go. What matters is understanding what your child needs and giving them the support, confidence, and encouragement to get there.

It’s a thoughtful conversation about school readiness and the importance of looking at the whole child, not just their age.

We especially appreciated the reminder that readiness can include communication, regulation, executive functioning, social-emotional development, and the supports a child has around them.

When children feel safe, connected, and engaged, they're more likely to explore, communicate, solve problems, and practice new skills.

That doesn't mean every moment has to be "teachable." Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens while building a fort, pretending to be dinosaurs, chasing bubbles, or sharing a laugh together.

Parent Tip: Spend 10–15 minutes each day following your child's lead in play. Put away distractions, let them choose the activity, and simply join in. By entering their world, you're strengthening your relationship and creating the perfect environment for learning to grow naturally.

When we think about our work in ABA, it’s easy to picture therapy spaces filled with toys, tablets used for data collection, and carefully designed skill-building goals. And that’s absolutely part of it.

But we also think about the people supporting our kiddos, showing up every day with patience, love, and more resilience than they often give themselves credit for.

So when a local mom organizing an Autism Awareness event in Crestview reached out, we didn’t hesitate. We jumped at the opportunity to support her and, in a small way, give back to the caregiver community that gives so much.

While our day-to-day work is centered on supporting children through ABA services and coaching families, this was our chance to pause and focus on the caregivers themselves. We put together a wellness basket designed with one goal in mind: for a caregiver to feel seen, appreciated, and just a little bit pampered.

If you’re local and want to be part of this community event, it will be hosted in Crestview on April 25th from 2:00–4:00 pm at Woodlawn Baptist Church. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate the Autism community together.

At Kith&Kin ABA, we believe inclusion should feel natural, joyful, and woven into everyday experiences. That’s why we’re so excited to partner with Little Adventures, a local gem bringing the magic of the Destin–Fort Walton Beach area to life through surfing, fishing, snorkeling, and hands-on coastal experiences designed just for kids.

Together, we had the privilege of working alongside their team to expand what inclusive adventure can look like by diving into different learning styles, sensory needs, and the importance of meeting each child where they are. Because success isn’t one-size-fits-all… and every version of a “win” deserves to be celebrated.

And the best part? This partnership is just getting started. Little Adventures is opening the door for a dedicated event designed specifically for our families by creating a space where kids can explore, engage, and experience these moments in a way that feels supportive, safe, and truly fun.

This is what community collaboration should look like.

There’s just something special about getting to support our local community and find new ways to bring joy into our sessions at the same time. Today’s mission? Show up for an amazing local group, Neurodiversity Resource of the Panhandle, AND hunt down some fresh, exciting toys that bring our kiddos joy.

Because let’s be real… one of the BEST parts of session is when we walk in with “the new hotness” and see those eyes get big 😍 That moment of excitement? That’s where connection starts, and that’s where the magic happens.

Autism OdysSea is a fun-filled day at the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station exclusively for families with adults or children on the spectrum. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience, with sea-themed activities that include touch tanks, sensory stations, crafts, kayaking, fishing, and animal encounters.

Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, we pause not just to raise awareness, but to deepen understanding.

At Kith&Kin ABA, we have the privilege of walking alongside families as they experience both the beauty and the challenges that come with autism. Every child, every family, and every journey is unique, and so is every brain.

To us, it’s not about “fixing” differences. It’s about understanding them.

When we take the time to learn how different brains work, we create space for compassion, patience, and meaningful connection. That understanding empowers families to navigate their journeys with confidence and helps children thrive as their authentic selves.
