Each year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) updates the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), impacting hospital payment rates, MS-DRG assignments, coding, quality reporting, and reimbursement. FY 2027 updates took effect October 1, 2026.

Among the notable changes is a 2.3% increase in hospital payment rates for qualifying acute care hospitals. CMS also deleted 18 MS-DRGs and created 14 new ones, bringing the total to 768 for FY 2027. Updated MS-DRG Grouper and Medicare Code Editor Version 44.0 also apply to discharges beginning October 1.

CMS is also updating quality reporting requirements and New Technology Add-on Payments (NTAPs), while introducing several measures that will take effect in future years. Notably, a new sepsis readmission measure will eventually be incorporated into payment reduction calculations beginning in FY 2030.

These changes highlight the importance of accurate coding, clinical documentation, data abstraction, and quality reporting. Staying informed about annual IPPS updates can help hospitals maintain compliance, support accurate reimbursement, and prepare for evolving quality requirements.

This week is National Healthcare Quality Week. This week comes by the National Associates of Healthcare Quality (NAHQ); dedicated time to celebrate the discipline and raise awareness of the positive impact those working in healthcare quality and safety have in their organizations and communities.
