One of the biggest misconceptions about the postpartum period is that you’re supposed to feel exactly like yourself after birth.

In reality, your body is adjusting to a rapid drop in estrogen and progesterone, recovering from pregnancy and delivery, adapting to disrupted sleep, and learning how to care for a newborn all at the same time.

If you’ve felt more anxious, emotional, irritable, overwhelmed, or unlike yourself after having a baby, there may be more going on than a lack of sleep.

Understanding the physiological changes that happen after birth can help explain why you feel the way you do and remind you that you’re not failing, you’re adjusting to a major transition.

You deserve support, answers, and care just as much as your baby does.

One of the things I love most about my work is that no two treatment plans are exactly alike.

At Behavioral Wellness for Women, care is individualized and that’s why it’s so important that I get to know my clients.

The goal isn’t to get every woman to the same medication dose or follow the exact same plan. The goal is to understand the person sitting in front of me.

Your symptoms, goals, lifestyle, history, side effects, and response to treatment all matter.

Because the “right” treatment plan isn’t the one that fits a textbook.

It’s the one that’s right for you.

Estrogen plays a role in serotonin production, sleep, memory, focus, and mood and when levels fluctuate or decline, some women notice increased anxiety, irritability, brain fog, sleep changes, or simply feel unlike themselves.

While hormones aren’t always the whole story, they can be an important piece of the puzzle.

Mood changes don’t always happen in isolation.

Sometimes anxiety, irritability, low mood, fatigue, brain fog, trouble focusing, or feeling unlike yourself can overlap with changes in thyroid function, nutrient status, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, or hormone fluctuations.

That’s why I often look beyond symptoms alone.

The goal isn’t just to prescribe medication. It’s to better understand what’s contributing to how you feel so we can create a more targeted plan to help you feel calmer, think more clearly, have more stable moods, and get back to feeling like yourself again.

During perimenopause, changing estrogen levels can affect mood, anxiety, sleep, focus, irritability, and stress tolerance which is why many women in their 40s suddenly start feeling emotionally “off” without realizing hormones may be playing a role.
