My answer...

My sister-in-love, Carrie.

She had one of those smiles that made you smile too. But what I remember most wasn't just her smile—it was the way she made people feel.

When you were with Carrie, she was completely present. She saw people through the redemptive eyes of Jesus. She faithfully prayed for her five brothers, one of them being my husband, Brandon. Today, I am watching many of those prayers come to fruition.

One of my favorite memories still makes me smile.

We were walking my German Shepherd, Jonah, and for some reason I proudly announced, "I know when she's about to go #1 or #2 by the way she hunches her back."

The moment the words left my mouth, I thought, "Why did I just say that?"

Carrie looked at me, crinkled up her cute little nose, smiled, and simply said...

"That's nice, Lisa."

😊

That little smile, that gentle response, and that ordinary moment have stayed with me for years.

I miss her.

Until then, I'll keep telling stories about the people I love, because love doesn't end when a life on earth does.

What About Me (WAM) was founded on a simple belief:
Every voice deserves to be heard.
Our mission is to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, respected, and connected. We
believe that listening can change lives, kindness matters, and no one should suffer in silence.
WAM seeks to bring awareness to the challenges that often go unseen—loneliness, bullying, grief,
isolation, mental health struggles, and the feeling that no one understands.
We hope to encourage meaningful conversations, strengthen connections, and offer hope to those
who may be struggling.
We also honor and support the families, friends, and communities affected by loss. Their voices
matter too. Their stories deserve to be heard. Their healing matters.
One conversation.
One voice.
One life at a time.

WAM – What About Me?

One of my favorite quotes from Henri Nouwen:
"When we ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find it is those
who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and
touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand..."
In a world that often rushes to fix, explain, or move on, some of the greatest gifts we can offer are
presence, compassion, and the willingness to simply sit with another human being in their pain.
This idea is at the heart of WAM — What About Me?
Not fixing.
Not rescuing.
Not speaking over someone's story.
Listening.
Honoring.
Bearing witness.
Because sometimes healing begins when someone feels seen, heard, and no longer alone.

What About Me?
This project is about more than telling stories.
It is about giving people a safe place to finally voice what they have carried quietly:
what they wish they knew,
what they know now,
what they couldn't say before,
and what they are finally ready to speak out loud.
Through this page and this book project, we hope to create a safe place for voices that may have
gone unheard for far too long.
Stories may be shared openly or quietly.
Publicly or privately.
With names or without names.
The heart of this project is not pressure.
It is dignity, compassion, healing conversations, awareness, and hope.
Because every voice deserves to be heard.

raft — Mother’s Day post
Today we honor every mother.
The mom packing lunches and braiding hair this morning. The mom whose child sits across the table grown. The mom whose chair holds an absence the world can’t see.
To the mothers whose babies were lost to bullying — your child mattered. Their voice mattered. And so does yours.
At What About Me?, we believe every voice deserves to be heard. Including the quiet, brave voices of mothers carrying grief no one talks about.
Whatever today feels like for you — joyful, tender, heavy, or all three — you are seen.

Some wounds don’t show up on a scan.
In the ER, we’re trained to look for what we can measure — vital signs, lab values, the picture an X-ray paints. But over 33 years of bedside care, I’ve learned that the wounds that scare me most are the ones I can’t see.
The teenager who came in “just feeling off.” The middle schooler whose parents thought it was a stomachache. The kid who couldn’t quite say what was wrong, because no one had ever asked in a way that felt safe to answer.
Bullying leaves marks. Just not always the kind a doctor can chart.
So here’s what I’ve learned at the bedside — and what I hope every parent, teacher, coach, and friend reading this will try:
Slow down. Make eye contact. Ask the second question, not just the first. “How are you?” gets you nowhere. “What was the hardest part of your day?” cracks the door open.
You’re not there to fix it. Just be the person who noticed.
That’s where healing starts. 💙
