Pine Valley Veterinary Clinic Our Mission:To provide high quality pet health and wellness services to assist your pet in living a longer, healthier life.

Established in July of 1979 in a leased space in the Pine Valley Mall, the clinic moved to its second location in May of 1990. On December 26, 2007, the move to our current location was completed. We strive to offer not only sound advice, but also optimal veterinary care, thus allowing you the enjoyment of your companion for a maximum number of years. Our job is not only to treat your pet when he or she isn't feeling well, but also to keep your best friend happy and healthy through preventative medicine.

Before the scrubs, stethoscopes, and lab work… there were kids who just really loved animals.

These photos are such a sweet reminder that for many people in veterinary medicine, that love started long before it became a career.

During Veterinary Technician Week, we’re celebrating the RVTs who turned that childhood love for animals into years of learning, hands-on skills, and patient care.

If your pet has ever had surgery, bloodwork, X-rays, a dental cleaning, medication filled, or needed a little extra comfort during a visit… there’s a good chance an RVT was behind it. 💙🐾

It’s Veterinary Technician Week and we’re celebrating the people who do so much behind the scenes to care for your pets.

Our RVTs are a huge part of what keeps Pine Valley running every day. They assist in surgery, monitor anesthesia, perform dental cleanings, collect and run lab samples, run other diagnostic testing, place IV catheters, take radiographs, fill prescriptions, care for hospitalized patients, educate owners, comfort nervous pets, and somehow still find time for puppy kisses and spicy-cat negotiations.

Their job takes skill, compassion, patience, attention to detail, and a whole lot of heart.

This week, we’re excited to shine a little extra light on our registered veterinary technicians and the work they do every single day.

If your veterinarian tells you your dog’s blood sample was lipemic, you may wonder what that actually means.

Lipemic blood looks cloudy or milky because there is a higher amount of fat circulating in the bloodstream. Sometimes that happens simply because your dog ate before their bloodwork—but if it keeps happening, it can be a clue that something else is going on.

Persistent lipemia can be associated with conditions such as:
🐾 Diabetes
🐾 Hypothyroidism
🐾 Cushing’s disease
🐾 Pancreatitis
🐾 High triglycerides or cholesterol
🐾 Certain breed-related conditions or medications

Why does it matter? Lipemia can sometimes affect how accurately certain lab values are measured, and it may be one of the reasons your veterinary team recommends fasting before bloodwork or repeating a test.

The important thing to remember is this: one lipemic sample does not automatically mean your dog is sick.

We look at the full picture—when your dog last ate, their symptoms, medical history, physical exam, and the rest of their lab results—to decide whether anything else needs to be investigated.

Bloodwork can tell us a lot about what’s happening inside your pet’s body, even before they show obvious signs that something is wrong. 💙

That crooked little smile may be adorable—but sometimes it can cause more than just a cute photo. 🐾

A malocclusion means a dog’s teeth or jaws don’t line up normally. Some dogs live perfectly comfortably with one, but depending on the type and severity, it can lead to problems like:

🐾 Teeth rubbing against the gums, lips, or roof of the mouth
🐾 Pain or difficulty chewing
🐾 Abnormal tooth wear
🐾 Food getting trapped between teeth
🐾 Increased risk of dental disease
🐾 Trauma or sores inside the mouth

That’s why we look at more than just how a dog’s teeth appear—we also want to make sure their bite is comfortable and functional.

Sometimes no treatment is needed. Other times, dental treatment, extractions, or referral to a veterinary dentist may be recommended to prevent ongoing pain or damage.

Cute smile? Absolutely.
But comfort always comes first. 💙

“My cat stays indoors, so they don’t need flea prevention.” Myth or truth?

Myth.

Indoor cats can still be exposed to fleas. Fleas can hitch a ride inside on people, other pets, clothing, shoes, or belongings—and once they’re inside, they can be difficult to get rid of.

Fleas aren’t just annoying, either. They can cause:

🐾 Intense itching and skin irritation
🐾 Flea allergy dermatitis
🐾 Hair loss and secondary skin infections
🐾 Tapeworm transmission
🐾 Anemia in severe infestations, especially in kittens or smaller pets

And because cats are such thorough groomers, you may not always see fleas even when they’re there.

Year-round flea prevention helps protect your cat before there’s a problem instead of trying to manage an infestation after it starts.

If you’re not sure which flea prevention is safest and most appropriate for your cat, talk with your veterinary team. 💙

If your pet’s ears are red, itchy, smelly, or full of dark debris, yeast may be part of the problem. 🐾

Yeast naturally lives on the skin and in the ears, but when the environment changes, it can overgrow and cause an ear infection.

Common signs include:
🐾 Head shaking
🐾 Scratching at the ears
🐾 Redness or swelling
🐾 A strong or musty odor
🐾 Brown or dark discharge
🐾 Sensitivity when the ears are touched

Here’s the important part: not every ear infection is caused by yeast. Bacteria, allergies, ear mites, moisture, foreign material, or other underlying issues can cause very similar symptoms.

That’s why simply grabbing an ear cleaner or leftover medication may not fix the problem and can sometimes make things worse.

A veterinary exam and ear cytology (where we take a swab sample and look at it under the microscope) can help identify what’s actually growing in the ear so the treatment matches the cause.

If your pet keeps getting ear infections, we may also need to look for the reason they’re happening in the first place, such as allergies or chronic inflammation.

Healthy ears shouldn’t be painful, itchy, or smelly. If something seems off, it’s worth having them checked. 💙 Give us a call at 260-489-1011

September is Happy Healthy Cat Month and one part of keeping cats healthy is recognizing that pain doesn’t always look obvious. 🐾

Cats are especially good at hiding discomfort, so arthritis may show up as subtle changes like:

🐾 Hesitating before jumping
🐾 Sleeping more or moving less
🐾 Avoiding stairs or favorite high spots
🐾 Grooming less
🐾 Becoming more irritable when touched
🐾 Having trouble getting into the litter box

These changes are sometimes brushed off as “just getting older,” but they can be signs of osteoarthritis pain.

Solensia is a once-monthly prescription injection for cats with osteoarthritis pain that’s given by our technicians. It works differently than traditional pain medications by targeting nerve growth factor, a protein involved in pain signaling.

For some cats, it can be a helpful option to improve comfort and make everyday movements—like jumping, climbing, and grooming—easier again.

If your cat has been slowing down or acting differently, talk with your veterinarian. A physical exam can help determine whether arthritis may be part of the problem and whether Solensia could be an appropriate option for your cat. 💙 Give us a call at 260-489-1011

Behind every appointment is a team of people who chose veterinary medicine because they genuinely care about animals.

Not One More Vet (NOMV) is an organization dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of veterinary professionals—a profession that carries an emotional weight many people never see.

There are joyful moments in vet med, but there are also incredibly hard ones. We care for sick and injured pets. We help families through heartbreaking goodbyes. We make difficult decisions with limited time, resources, and sometimes very few good options. And through all of it, we know that the person on the other side of the exam table is worried, scared, and trying to do what’s best for someone they love.

That’s something we have in common.

You want what’s best for your pet. So do we.

Sometimes we may recommend testing you weren’t expecting. Sometimes we may tell you something you don’t want to hear. Sometimes we may not be able to give you the answer or outcome you were hoping for. But our goal is never to make a difficult day harder—we’re trying to use our knowledge, experience, and resources to help your pet as much as we can.

Veterinary professionals experience significant emotional and mental-health pressures, and NOMV works to provide education, peer support, and resources for the people caring for animals every day.

So when you visit your veterinary clinic, remember there are people behind the scrubs, too.

Ask questions. Advocate for your pet. Tell us when you’re worried. But please lead with kindness.

A little patience, understanding, or even a simple “thank you for taking care of them” can mean more than you may realize.
