Every skilled veterinary professional starts by learning the basics and every new skill is built through education, practice, and hands-on experience.

Hands-on experience is one of the most valuable parts of learning in veterinary medicine. We’re always proud to be part of that journey for someone.

In veterinary medicine, there’s no substitute for learning under the guidance of experienced doctors and technicians. From restraining to drawing blood, each skill takes time, repetition, and mentorship to develop with confidence.

Last week our veterinary assistant Will completed his first blood draw as part of that learning process. As an undergraduate student with plans to attend veterinary school, he’s building the foundation he’ll carry throughout his career.

We’re proud to invest in the next generation of veterinary professionals because great patient care starts with a commitment to lifelong learning. 💙🐾

Summer is meant for making memories with your pets, but it’s also the season when we see many preventable emergencies.

Whether you’re spending the day at the lake, grilling in the backyard, or heading out on a hike, keep these common summer hazards in mind:

☀️ Hot pavement can burn sensitive paw pads.
🌽 Corn cobs are a common cause of intestinal blockages.
🌊 Always supervise pets around pools and lakes.
🦟 Don’t skip monthly heartworm prevention.
🍃 Check your pet after walks for burrs, foxtails, and grass awns.

A few extra precautions can go a long way toward keeping your best friend healthy all summer long!

😷 The air may look hazy today, but it’s affecting more than just people. It’s affecting our pets, too.

Fort Wayne is under an Air Quality Alert due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, with air quality expected to be unhealthy across northeast Indiana.

If possible today:
🏠 Keep pets indoors as much as you can
🚶 Skip long walks, runs, or strenuous outdoor play
💧 Make sure fresh water is always available
🐶 Watch for coughing, excessive panting, watery eyes, or difficulty breathing, especially in pets with heart or lung disease, senior pets, and flat-faced breeds.

If your pet is having trouble breathing or seems unusually distressed, please contact a vet right away.

We hope everyone—two-legged and four-legged—can stay safe until the air quality improves. 💙

🐱 FIP is one of the most serious diseases we see in cats, but early action can make a difference.

For years, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was considered untreatable. While treatment options have advanced, timing is critical. Waiting to see if your cat gets better on their own can allow the disease to progress, making treatment more difficult and, in some cases, no longer an option.

If your cat has a persistent fever, isn’t eating, is losing weight, seems unusually tired, or develops a swollen belly, don’t wait to have them evaluated.

The sooner we can examine your cat and determine what’s going on, the better we can guide you through the next steps.

Losing a pet is every owner’s worst nightmare, but knowing what to do can make all the difference.

If your pet goes missing:
🔍 Start searching immediately. Check your home, neighborhood, and any favorite hiding spots.

📞 Contact your local animal shelters and veterinary clinics. Many lost pets are brought to these locations first.

📱 Post clear, recent photos on local lost-and-found pet pages and community groups. Include where and when your pet was last seen.

🏷️ Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered and your contact information is up to date. A microchip can only help reunite you if the information attached to it is current.

👥 Ask friends, family, and neighbors to help spread the word. The more eyes looking, the better.

💙 July is Lost Pet Prevention Month, and to help more pets find their way home, we’re offering 10% off microchips all month long!

If your pet isn’t microchipped yet—or you’re not sure if your contact information is current—now is the perfect time to take that extra step.

The best way to prepare for the unexpected is before it happens. A collar and ID tag are important, but a microchip provides permanent identification that can help reunite you with your pet if their collar comes off.
