On Labor Day, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation joins the nation in recognizing the dignity of work and the men and women whose labor sustains this community in Fort Wayne.

Catholic Social Teaching holds that work is not merely a means of survival but an expression of the human person made in the image of God, and that the fruits of labor must be shared in solidarity, particularly with those who are poor or vulnerable. These convictions shaped the life of Saint Katharina Kasper, foundress of The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, who grew up in a poor farming family in Dernbach, Germany, and dedicated her life and her Sisters' lives to standing beside laborers, the sick, and the poor.

A large bronze statue by Bert Gerresheim in Germany captures her spirit. It depicts Saint Katharina lovingly attending to a homeless worker marked by hunger and exhaustion, offering him both a Rosary and a coin, a dual expression of embracive love that meets spiritual and physical needs together.

This approach to the whole person, tending to body and spirit, dignity and material need, guides the strategies the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation works with our partners to offer Fort Wayne today.

On September 5, the Church honors Saint Teresa of Calcutta, canonized in 2016 and remembered for a life spent among the poorest of the poor. Her witness speaks directly to the mission the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation carries forward in Fort Wayne.

Saint Teresa taught that greatness is found in small acts done with great love, a conviction that echoes the spirit of Saint Katharina Kasper, foundress of The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, who called her Sisters to humble service among the sick and the poor so that, in her words, God alone might be glorified. Both women understood that every person, regardless of circumstance, bears an irreducible dignity rooted in being made in the image of God, a truth at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching and of the Foundation's own work in this community.

Saint Teresa's private letters, published after her death, revealed decades of profound spiritual darkness that she carried quietly while continuing her labor without pause. Her perseverance is a reminder that faithful mission does not depend on constant consolation. It depends on steady, humble commitment to the person in front of you.

On this feast day, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation gives thanks for the example of Saint Teresa of Calcutta and reaffirms its commitment to the legacy of Saint Katharina Kasper: dignified, compassionate care for every person in Fort Wayne and beyond.

Today we remember August 28, 1868, when eight Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ arrived in Hessen Cassel at the invitation of Bishop John Henry Luers. He asked Saint Katharina Kasper for Sisters who could serve the many German immigrant families settling in the area. Within weeks of arrival, they were running the parish school and caring for the sick.

The sisters care for immigrants reshaped healthcare in northeast Indiana. In 1869, they opened St. Joseph Hospital, the city's first hospital. When the hospital was sold in 1998, its proceeds created the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation to continue that mission of care.

Care for immigrants has always been important to the Poor Handmaids' mission. It guides the Foundation today as we support programs that welcome our newest neighbors with dignity and compassion.

On this anniversary, we give thanks for the eight Sisters who crossed an ocean and for a mission of hospitality that continues to shape our community.
