Ortho Northeast was founded in 1962 and is Fort Wayne's premier orthopaedic center. With our impressive roster of board-certified orthopedic physicians, qualified medical employees and satellite clinics throughout the area, ONE is among the largest and most experienced specialty centers of any kind in northeast Indiana. This World Trauma Day, October 17th, we are thinking about what it takes to build a great trauma surgeon.

Dr. Heisler's advice to those just starting out is to immerse themselves fully, to learn from as many different practitioners as possible, and to travel and observe the many ways a problem can be solved. Above all, it comes down to showing up every single day with an open mind and a willingness to grow.

This World Spine Day, October 16th, is a good reminder of how far spine care has come.

For years, the thought of spine surgery came bundled with dread, long recoveries, limited movement, and weeks away from normal life. Dr. Smith is helping change that expectation, explaining how modern, minimally invasive techniques disrupt far less muscle and tissue than the surgeries of the past. Many procedures are now done on an outpatient basis, letting patients heal in the comfort of their own home and sleep in their own bed the very first night.

After 34 years of caring for patients, solving problems, and doing work he truly loved, Dr. William Berghoff has officially begun his next chapter. ❤️

As we close out our three-part tribute, we wanted to leave you with a few words from Dr. Berghoff himself as he reflects on his career, the people he’s met along the way, and what the years at Ortho Northeast have meant to him.

Dr. Berghoff, thank you for the impact you’ve made on your patients, your colleagues, and our entire ONE family. Your legacy here will be felt for years to come.

Over a career spanning decades, Dr. Berghoff treated thousands of patients and mentored the next generation of surgeons who will carry his standards forward.

Those who worked alongside him describe a rare combination of intensity and genuine warmth, a physician who advocated fiercely for his patients while always making time to ask about your family. His impact on this practice and on the Fort Wayne community will be felt for years to come.
