☀️ By 4, kids are turning into little storytellers! It’s such a fun stage to watch communication click into place.

On the understanding side, most 4 year olds can follow multi-step directions, understand more complex sentences, answer questions about stories, and start understanding concepts like same/different. On the talking side, we look for longer sentences with correct grammar, clear speech that strangers can understand almost all of the time, asking lots of “why” and “how” questions, and telling a simple story with a beginning, middle, and end.

No need to stress over this list. It’s just a general guide, not a pass/fail test, and every kiddo has their own timeline. That said, if your gut is telling you something feels off, trust it. You don’t have to wait around to find out.

☀️ SO much growth happens between 2 and 3. It’s honestly one of the biggest leaps in communication development!

On the understanding side, most 3 year olds can follow two-step directions, understand action and descriptive words, know what objects are used for, identify body parts, and much more! On the talking side, we look for phrases used frequently, speech that’s understood most of the time, answering wh- questions, and retelling things that have happened.

No need to stress over this list. It’s just a general guide, not a pass/fail test, and every kiddo has their own timeline. That said, if your gut is telling you something feels off, trust it. You don’t have to wait around to find out.

By age 2, your toddler’s communication is really starting to grow!

On the understanding side, most 2 year olds can identify body parts, find objects you name, understand simple actions, and follow one-step directions (“get your shoes,” “sit down”). On the talking side, we look for lots of imitation, a variety of consonant sounds, asking “what’s that?”, and naming objects around them.

Please remember! This isn’t a checklist to pass or fail. We could never list every single thing a 2 year old should be doing – they are growing so much! Each child grows at their own pace. But if something’s nagging at you, you don’t have to “wait and see” to find out. That instinct is worth listening to.
