Did you know: 1 in 5 moms and 1 in 10 dads suffer from postpartum depression?*
Many new moms experience anxiety and self-doubts after childbirth. But in part 2 of this series on postpartum mental health, we take a closer look at three serious conditions to look out for:
Postpartum depression (PPD)
The depression symptoms are more intense and last longer. New moms start to feel like they are incompetent and alone, lacking focus and concentration, constantly worrying, just going through the motions, not sure who they are anymore, having racing and intrusive thoughts, that their baby doesn’t like them, and/or wish they could run away.
Postpartum anxiety
Some mothers experience severe anxiety after childbirth that interferes with their ability to function. This can include obsessive and unrealistic worries about harm to their baby, inability to focus or relax, shortness of breath, disrupted sleep, loss of appetite, repetitive checking of environment even when there’s no danger, upset stomach, and/or panic attacks. It can occur on its own or alongside PPD.
Postpartum psychosis.
Very rarely, this severe condition can develop within about the first week of delivery. It includes symptoms such as feeling confused and lost, hallucinations and delusions, paranoia, and, in some cases, thoughts of self-harm.
If you’re having symptoms of postpartum psychosis, get help immediately!

Important reminders:
➡️ Know the signs and symptoms. See above ☝️.
➡️ Keep tabs on your mental state, whether through regular self check-ins or using a trusted friend as an emotional mirror.
➡️ Self-care is not selfish. It’s a bit like ensuring that your oxygen mask is still in place so you don’t run out of air while helping your child.
➡️ Know when to get help from a mental health professional.
Many parents feel ashamed or they may fear judgement for seeking help.
👉 But reaching out for help is NOT a sign of failure! It may be one of the bravest and most caring things you ever do.
