Did you know: 1 in 5 moms and 1 in 10 dads suffer from postpartum depression?*

Many new moms experience anxiety and self-doubts after childbirth. But in part 2 of this series on postpartum mental health, we take a closer look at three serious conditions to look out for:

Postpartum depression (PPD)
The depression symptoms are more intense and last longer. New moms start to feel like they are incompetent and alone, lacking focus and concentration, constantly worrying, just going through the motions, not sure who they are anymore, having racing and intrusive thoughts, that their baby doesn’t like them, and/or wish they could run away.

Postpartum anxiety
Some mothers experience severe anxiety after childbirth that interferes with their ability to function. This can include obsessive and unrealistic worries about harm to their baby, inability to focus or relax, shortness of breath, disrupted sleep, loss of appetite, repetitive checking of environment even when there’s no danger, upset stomach, and/or panic attacks. It can occur on its own or alongside PPD.

Postpartum psychosis.
Very rarely, this severe condition can develop within about the first week of delivery. It includes symptoms such as feeling confused and lost, hallucinations and delusions, paranoia, and, in some cases, thoughts of self-harm.
If you’re having symptoms of postpartum psychosis, get help immediately!

———
🚨 If you are in crisis, please call your local emergency number or the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
———

Important reminders:

➡️ Know the signs and symptoms. See above ☝️.

➡️ Keep tabs on your mental state, whether through regular self check-ins or using a trusted friend as an emotional mirror.

➡️ Self-care is not selfish. It’s a bit like ensuring that your oxygen mask is still in place so you don’t run out of air while helping your child.

➡️ Know when to get help from a mental health professional.

Many parents feel ashamed or they may fear judgement for seeking help.

👉 But reaching out for help is NOT a sign of failure! It may be one of the bravest and most caring things you ever do.

The start of the sunny months can serve as a reset for our minds, allowing us to reexamine our thought patterns, habits, and feelings with a fresh perspective. 💐☀️

One way to do this is by . 📓

💡Keeping a journal can help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. And it’s not only writing. It can serve as a space to creatively express oneself, which can look different for each person. 🎨

Five spring journal ideas:

1.) Happy words 😊
In big letters, write a positive emotion (e.g., happy, calm, inspired). Underneath or around it, jot down things that make you feel that way. For example, if your word was “calm,” you might write “walking outside,” “taking a bath,” etc.

2.) Capture the moment ⏳
Think of a recent moment of happiness. Challenge yourself to fill a page or two describing only that moment, noting your emotions, all five senses, what made it special, etc. Solidify some happiness in your brain.

3.) Stress circles ⭕️
On a blank page in your journal, draw a bunch of overlapping circles. Then, with markers or colored pens, fill in some of the overlapping spaces. This is an easy drawing exercise that doesn’t have to be perfect, and it’s a good way to engage the senses and relax the mind.

4.) Self-care reminder notes 🗒️
Create a list of positive reminders you can look at when negative self-talk takes over. Use phrases like “I am loved and valued,” and “I don’t have to be perfect, what matters is that I’m trying,” Write them on sticky notes and place them around your house where you’ll pass by them later.

5.) Intentions and introspection 🤔
Take a moment to answer these questions:
- What habits do you want to leave behind from the winter?
- What is one area of your life in which you want a fresh start? (Brainstorm a few easy first steps.)
- What are you most looking forward to this month?

Use the start of spring as a chance to be intentional about building a happier, healthier life with self-care and mindfulness.

April is Autism Acceptance Month, which makes this the perfect time to introduce our newest therapist, Nancy Whitehead, who specializes in neurodivergence, autism and ADHD.

“My goal is not to change who someone is, but to help them better understand their strengths, reduce barriers, and build tools that allow them to succeed in the environments that matter to them,” she says.

According to her experience, therapy can help neurodivergent individuals in many ways, including:
1️⃣ building practical social, communication and self-regulation skills
2️⃣ strengthening confidence, self-acceptance and resilience
3️⃣ creating strategies for navigating environments like school, work and relationships

With 30 years of experience making her clients feel comfortable and understood, she has worked with individuals across the neurodiversity spectrum, as well as clients with depression, anxiety, those navigating addiction, and families.

Nancy grew up with a mother on the autism spectrum, so working with neurodivergent individuals instantly resonated with her.

“I witnessed firsthand both the strengths and the misunderstandings that often accompany neurodivergence,” she said.

With a commitment to being a catalyst for growth and healing in Fort Worth, Nancy is a great addition to the practice.

“I want to create a space in the Fort Worth community that feels like wrapping up in a warm blanket—somewhere you can exhale, feel safe, and know you’re truly seen.”

Celebrated. Safe. Welcome.

For many women, motherhood can be very different from how they expected it would be. The adjustment can lead to intense anxiety and feelings of self-doubt.

🤰 With changes to mind, body, relationships and routine, it’s no wonder that new moms are susceptible to mental and emotional health difficulties during this time.

After all,

You’re taking care of baby👩‍🍼.
Who’s taking care of you? 🤷‍♀️

👉 Here are some quick reality-check tips for moms:

1. Acknowledge that you’re in a challenging situation and a demanding role right now facing obstacles such as lack of sleep, a chaotic routine, cultural pressure, and social isolation. Doubts and fears are normal. Give yourself a bit of grace and expect some struggles and a lot of learning and growth.

2. Ask for help.
Most friends and family want to help, they may just not know how. So tell them what you need and be specific. Don’t be afraid to sound “selfish.” This is for everyone’s benefit!

3. Don’t compare yourself with other people’s Instagram moments. That’s not realistic or fair to you or your baby. This moment is about you… not them!

4. Take care of yourself: Give yourself permission to dedicate some regular time to self-care activities.

5. Consider therapy: Having a dedicated safe space to process all of the changes, talk through intense feelings, and build healthier thought patterns and coping skills can be an effective way to stay on top of your mental health.

6. Know the signs of postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety and postpartum psychosis, and don’t wait to get help.

Taking care of your wellbeing is a bit like ensuring your own oxygen mask is still on so that you can continue to assist your child. 🛩️

So give yourself permission to dedicate some regular time to self-care activities.

And remember that
- This is temporary.
- You’re not alone.
- Help is available.
- You will make it.

⚠️ It’s important to acknowledge that there are compounding factors of being a new mom:
- You’re not getting enough sleep.
- Your routine is chaotic.
- You’re under a lot of intense social and cultural pressure.
- Your sense of identity is shifting.
- You may suddenly feel socially isolated.
👉 Here are some quick reality-check tips to help moms make it through this challenging time:

1. Acknowledge that you’re in a challenging situation and a demanding role right now.

4. Take care of yourself: Give yourself permission to dedicate some regular time to self-care activities.

5. Consider therapy: Having a dedicated safe space to process all of the changes, talk through intense feelings, and build healthier thought patterns and coping skills can be an effective way to stay on top of your mental health and reduce the risk of things spiraling out of control. Many therapists offer in-person sessions with the option to switch to virtual on days when that’s more convenient to stay at home.

6. Know the signs of postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety and postpartum psychosis, and don’t wait to get help.

🛫 Remember the safety presentations on airplanes?

Taking care of your wellbeing is a bit like ensuring your own oxygen mask is still on so that you can continue to assist your child. 🛩️

And if you run out of air, you won’t be able to keep meeting your baby’s needs. That’s not going to help anybody.

So give yourself permission to dedicate some regular time to self-care activities.

Overall, remember that
- This is temporary.
- You’re not alone.
- Help is available.
- You will make it.
