If you constantly feel drained, get sick more often than you’d expect, or you’re dealing with ongoing aches, pains, or exhaustion, your nervous system may have been under stress for longer than you realize.
We all have different levels of capacity. Some people can spend hours in busy, crowded places and feel energized. Others become overwhelmed much more quickly. Neither is wrong. The important part is learning what your nervous system can handle and recognizing when it needs time to recover.
It’s completely normal to go beyond your limits sometimes. Life happens. The key is giving your nervous system opportunities to return to a place of safety and regulation.
Here are a few simple ways to help:
1. Choose a space where you feel safe. For many people, that’s a cozy bedroom, couch, or another place where they can truly relax. Your environment sends powerful signals to your nervous system.
2. Get comfortable. Keep the room cool if possible, grab a blanket, dim the lights, and create a space that feels calming to you.
3. Take a break from notifications. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb or Airplane Mode for a while. If someone may be expecting you, send a quick text first, then give yourself permission to unplug.
4. Let your mind slow down. Watch a comfort show, read a good book, listen to music, or do something that helps you relax without feeling like you always have to be productive.
Taking care of your nervous system isn’t a luxury—it’s part of taking care of your overall health.
When you make space to rest and reset, you may notice you feel less irritable, more present with the people you care about, and better able to recognize when your mind and body need a break.
