We’re proud to see Jaime Cobb-Tinsley, Vice President of Family & Professional Education at the James L. West Center for Dementia Care, sharing her expertise on the national stage at HEALTHTAC West 2026.

During the panel “Beyond the Care Plan: Training, Environment and Dignity in Memory Care,” Jaime emphasized something that is central to our approach at James L. West: people living with dementia deserve curiosity, empathy, dignity and the freedom to live meaningful lives.

As Jaime shared, “We’re not there to correct or control. We’re there to be curious.”

The conversation explored how caregiver education builds confidence, why we use the word expressions rather than behaviors, and how thoughtful dementia care can balance safety with independence and quality of life. Jaime also highlighted the importance of workforce development and creating environments that offer older adults greater freedom and choice.

We’re grateful to Jaime for representing James L. West and continuing to advance a more compassionate, person-centered approach to dementia care.

🏔️ Days 2 & 3 at AgingIN — learning, connecting, and reaching new heights!

Our team has been making the most of every moment at the AgingIN™ Annual Conference in Denver, with experiences that took learning beyond the conference room.

🧗‍♀️ Hollie and Jaime took on a rock-climbing experience with Up Ending Parkinson’s, embracing the challenge and the conference theme of reaching new heights.

🌱 Valynda and Pam got their hands dirty learning about gardening and creating arrangements that will be donated to a local community garden — a meaningful way to leave a little something behind in Denver.

📚 In between these hands-on experiences, our team spent time in educational sessions, gathering new ideas, perspectives, and inspiration to bring back home and put into practice.

🍽️ And, of course, there was time to come together over a great team dinner — sharing what we’ve learned, enjoying one another’s company, and reflecting on a few memorable days.

We’re grateful for opportunities like these to learn, grow, connect, and be inspired alongside others who are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for older adults.

What a great few days at ! 🏔️💚

💙 Building confidence through hands-on learning!

We recently welcomed family caregivers to James L. West for our Dementia Caregiver Skills Workshop, an interactive opportunity to learn and practice skills that can make everyday caregiving a little easier.

Participants practiced hands-on techniques for assisting with daily activities such as eating, dressing, bathing, and mobility. We also explored strategies for responding to resistance and agitation and ways to create a safer, more dementia-friendly home environment.

Caring for someone living with dementia can bring new challenges as needs change. Our goal is to give caregivers practical tools, knowledge, and confidence they can take home and use in their everyday caregiving journey. 💙

Thank you to everyone who joined us and spent the day learning alongside our team!

🏔️ Day 1 in Denver with AgingIN

Members of our team are in the Mile High City this week for the AgingIN™ Annual Conference, and we’re excited to be part of the conversations shaping the future of aging services.

This year’s theme, “Peak Purpose: Redefining How We Live and Age,” is bringing together leaders, care teams, researchers, and changemakers committed to creating more person-directed, meaningful experiences for older adults.

Day 1 was all about learning, connecting, and exploring new ideas around living longer and living better. We’re looking forward to bringing those insights and inspiration back home as we continue creating opportunities for dignity, purpose, connection, and joy in the lives of those we serve.

Here’s to reaching new heights together! 🏔️

🌿 August is National Wellness Month!

Wellness doesn’t have an age limit — and it doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For older adults, wellness can mean moving the body, engaging the mind, enjoying a favorite activity, connecting with others, or simply having a peaceful moment in the day. 💙

Throughout August, we’re celebrating the many ways we can support the well-being of older adults, families, and caregivers.

Because sometimes the smallest moments can make the biggest difference.

💬 What does wellness look like to you?

"This is why I love where Phil is. You have some very special staff who work with the residents in a loving and caring way."

After witnessing one of our life enrichment aids comfort and dance with a resident during music time, a family member shared these heartfelt words with our team. What began as a moment of confusion became a moment of peace, joy, and connection—all through kindness, patience, and person-centered care.

At the James L. West Center for Dementia Care, we believe every interaction matters. Our team works each day to preserve dignity, create meaningful moments, and help every resident feel seen, valued, and supported.

A special thank you to Lazia for exemplifying the compassionate care that defines our mission. 💙

One of the biggest mistakes caregivers make? Trying to use logic.

When someone is living with dementia, the brain may no longer be able to access or process information the way it once did. Correcting them, arguing, or trying to reason often leads to frustration for everyone involved.

Instead of focusing on the facts, focus on the feeling.

💜 Validate the emotion.
💜 Address the immediate need.
💜 Gently redirect.

Remember: Validate. Fix. Distract.

Meeting someone where they are creates connection, reduces distress, and helps preserve their dignity.

Follow Dementia-IQ for practical, evidence-based tips to support those living with dementia and the people who care for them.

🤝 Today is International Day of Friendship.

Friendship has no age limit. Whether it's a lifelong friend, a family member, a neighbor, or a caregiver, meaningful relationships enrich our lives and remind us that we are never alone.

Today, take a moment to reach out to someone who has made a difference in your life. A simple conversation, visit, or phone call can brighten someone's day.

Happy International Day of Friendship! 💙

Sometimes the most meaningful moments in dementia care aren't planned—they happen in the middle of an ordinary day.

During a recent music program, one resident was feeling confused and unable to settle. Life Enrichment aid Lazia gently stepped in, wrapped him in a hug, and invited him to dance as "Let It Be" played. By the end of the song, he was smiling, relaxed, and happily enjoying the music alongside everyone else.

A family member who witnessed the moment later shared:
"This is why I love where Phil is. You have some very special staff who work with the residents in a loving and caring way. Thank you for all you do!"

Moments like these remind us that dementia care isn't just about meeting physical needs—it's about meeting people where they are with compassion, dignity, and connection.

We're incredibly proud of Lazia and our entire care team for creating these moments every single day. ❤️

Bath time doesn't have to be a battle. 💙

For many people living with dementia, resistance to bathing isn't really about the bath—it's about feeling cold, confused, vulnerable, or out of control.

A few simple changes can make a world of difference:
🛁 Warm the bathroom before starting.
🎵 Play calming music or a favorite artist.
🧼 Begin with something small, like washing hands or face.
💙 Explain each step before helping.
✨ Focus on comfort before the task.

When we change our approach, we can often reduce resistance before it even begins.

Watch this week's Dementia-IQ for practical caregiving tips from Hollie Lowe and Jaime Cobb Tinsley, powered by the James L. West Center for Dementia Care.

💬 What bathing tip has worked best for you? Share it in the comments—we'd love to hear from you.
