Honest question: when was the last time you had a REAL comprehensive eye exam — not a quick vision screening at a job physical or the DMV, but a full dilated exam with an actual eye doctor?

If you had to think about it for more than a few seconds, you're not alone. And that's exactly the problem Healthy Aging Month is trying to solve: the conditions that steal the most vision — glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease — don't cause symptoms until real damage is already done.

Tag someone who's overdue. (No judgment. We're all a little overdue.)

Friday night lights back on at stadiums across DFW. Cooler evenings in Sundance Square. New exhibits opening at the Modern and the Kimbell. Panther Island getting quieter and prettier as the heat breaks.

Fall in Fort Worth has a way of sneaking up on you — one week it's still 100 degrees, the next you're pulling out a hoodie for a Friday game.

Ophthalmology Associates has been part of this city for over 50 years, watching every season change across five DFW locations. Whatever's on your fall calendar — see it clearly.

Why do your letters look blurry whether you're two feet away or twenty?

That's usually astigmatism — one of the most common (and most misunderstood) vision conditions out there. Instead of your eye being perfectly round, it's shaped a little more like a football, which bends light unevenly as it hits your retina. The result: blur at every distance, not just close-up or far away.

It's not rare. It's not serious on its own. And it's easily corrected with the right glasses, contacts, or, for the right candidates, LASIK.

If you've been squinting at things near and far and assumed it was just "your eyes getting older," it might be something a lot simpler to fix.

Amblyopia. You probably know it as "lazy eye" — and if you have a school-age kid, this is worth two minutes of your time.

Here's what makes it tricky: amblyopia is highly treatable if it's caught early in childhood. But left untreated past a certain age, the vision loss becomes permanent. And a child with amblyopia often doesn't know anything is wrong — their brain simply learns to rely on the stronger eye and tunes the weaker one out.

A basic vision screening at school can miss it entirely. A comprehensive eye exam is what actually catches it.

If your child hasn't had a full eye exam recently, this is the month to get it on the calendar.

He grew up bouncing between Detroit, Waco, Montgomery, and South India. Somewhere in there, he found ophthalmology — and Fort Worth found him in 2010.

Meet Dr. Unni Nair. 👋

Dr. Nair specializes in glaucoma consultation and surgery, along with cataract and lens implant surgery, and has spent the last 15 years treating patients across our Fort Worth and Weatherford locations. He trained at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, completed his residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, and stayed an extra year for a glaucoma fellowship because — in his words — the mentors there were some of the best in the field.

Off the clock, he's a dad to two daughters and still gets out for basketball with friends when he can.

If glaucoma runs in your family, or it's just been a while since your last comprehensive exam, Dr. Nair's door is open.

Friday nights under the lights. Saturday morning soccer. Volleyball season in full swing.

Here's a stat most parents don't know: sports cause tens of thousands of eye injuries in the U.S. every year, and basketball is currently the number one cause. Most of these are completely preventable with the right eye protection.

Not sunglasses. Not everyday glasses. Actual sports eye guards, rated for impact.

September is Sports Eye Safety Month, and it's the easiest reminder all year: check what your kid is wearing on the field, the court, or the pool deck before the season gets any busier.

Today, we pause to remember.

Twenty-five years ago, the world changed in a single morning. We remember those we lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the resilience that carried this country forward in the years since.

Fort Worth remembers. We remember.

It's called "the sneak thief of sight" for a reason.

Glaucoma doesn't hurt. It doesn't blur your vision overnight. It doesn't announce itself. It quietly takes your peripheral vision first — the part you don't notice missing until a significant amount of it is already gone.

By the time most people notice something's wrong, they've already lost vision that can't be recovered.

The only way to catch it early is a comprehensive eye exam that checks your eye pressure and the health of your optic nerve — not just whether you can read the chart on the wall.

If it's been a while, this is the month to stop putting it off.

Labor Day is for the people who keep Fort Worth running — nurses working the holiday shift, contractors framing tomorrow's houses, servers keeping the Stockyards fed on a long weekend.

Today, we're taking a beat right along with you.

Happy Labor Day from all of us at Ophthalmology Associates.

September is Healthy Aging Month — and if you've never thought about your eyes as part of "aging well," now's a good time to start.

Cataracts. Glaucoma. Macular degeneration. None of these show up overnight. They build slowly, quietly, over ten or twenty years, which means the exam you skip in your 40s is the vision problem you're dealing with in your 60s.

The good news: almost all of it is manageable, and most of it is preventable, if it's caught early enough.

Healthy aging doesn't start with your knees or your cholesterol. For a lot of people, it starts with an eye exam they've been putting off.
