Last, but certainly not least, meet our third intern Nelson Wong, a member of the Class of 2028 at Rice University.

After college, Nelson plans to pursue a career in medicine, explore the world, and try new things! He would like to stay in-state in Texas or go to California for medical school. Ophthalmology interests him because even a small change in someone’s vision could have a huge impact on their quality of life.

Nelson hopes to gain meaningful patient interaction experiences, to immerse himself the world of Ophthalmology, to learn more about the tools and strategies used to solve health problems, and to see the decisions made in real time—all while being a part of the team that makes the clinic flow smoothly.

After conducting research and witnessing cataract surgery, Nelson was intrigued by the precision of the eye—how structures just millimeters wide could determine the sense of sight, independence, and quality of life. He wants to understand not just what goes wrong in eye disease but why, as well as interact with patients who are experiencing eye conditions firsthand.

While at FWEA, Nelson witnessed how every member of the team works together to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. From the front desk, technicians, and physicians, everyone plays an important role in creating a smooth experience for patients. Seeing this collaboration has shown him that being a great healthcare provider is more than diagnosis and treatment. Communicating clearly, building trust, showing empathy, and ensuring patients feel heard and cared for throughout their visit is just as important.

Nelson has found FWEA to be a lovely clinic where working alongside such supportive doctors, staff, and fellow interns has created an environment where he feels comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and continuously improving. It has reinforced his appreciation for the teamwork, communication, efficiency, and compassion that are needed to deliver exceptional healthcare. It’s also amazing helping people with their health and eyes- seeing how better health can help restore confidence and happiness.

During his downtime, Nelson enjoys the manga series “Hunter x Hunter.” A few of his Fort Worth favorites are Ampersand, Magnolia Street, and Teddy Wong’s, and his hobbies include basketball, running, and going to new coffee shops and restaurants.

Our next intern is Jane Anderson, a member of the Class of 2028 at University of Texas at Austin majoring in neuroscience.

Jane plans to attend Physician Assistant (PA) school after graduation. For now, she is keeping an open mind about schools, though she is keeping her eyes on UT Southwestern and UNT Health Science Center.

Throughout this internship, Jane hopes to gain experience and understanding in how to be an effective provider in the future, using the knowledge gained in the ophthalmology field as well as the interactions between patients and doctors.

Jane says the best thing about the FWEA internship experience has been the students, techs, and doctors at both the Community Eye Clinic and Fort Worth Eye Associates. Everyone has been so eager to teach the interns about ophthalmology and the healthcare field. These lessons and experiences provide valuable skills in a short amount of time. They truly care about the interns' experience!

Jane’s favorite move is “Interstellar,” and she enjoys seeing performances at Bass Concert Hall. During her free time, Jane enjoys performing/playing music, reading, baking, and hiking.

Meet Adley Zalewski, one of our summer interns. She is a member of the class of 2027 at the University of Richmond. After college, she plans to attend medical school. While she does not have a dream school in mind, McGovern UT, VCU, and Columbia are on her radar.

Adley points out that talking about an empathetic bedside manner and practicing it are two very different things. Because of this internship, she has built confidence in speaking with patients—putting theory into action. This internship is giving her a unique opportunity to grow her skills to be a better communicator and healthcare provider.

Additionally, Adley has appreciated “everything”—particularly the kindness and support from the doctors and staff and the chance to learn so much.

During Adley’s downtime, she enjoys watching “Widows Bay,” “Yellow Jackets,” and Moulin Rouge. And she is soaking up Fort Worth culture at The Stockyards (she loves two-steppin’), Ampersand, and Trinity Park. She can also be found estate sale shopping and crocheting.

We’re excited to introduce the 2026 Fort Worth Eye Associates (FWEA) Intern Leadership Board—a group that represents the very best of our past interns and the future of leadership in medicine.

Please join us in welcoming our newest members:
David Toledo (MS4, UNT Health Fort Worth) and David Borrman (GWU)

And welcoming back our returning leaders:
Ellie Sinnott (GWU), Thomas Boothby (UVA/McIntire), and Amelia Hayde (LSU)

The Intern Leadership Board is composed of individuals who distinguished themselves through work ethic, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to patient care during their time in our program. This group plays a critical role in shaping the future of the FWEA Summer Internship—reviewing applications, conducting interviews, mentoring prospective interns, and upholding the high standards that define our program.

This is not a role offered to all interns. It is an honor earned by those who consistently go above and beyond—and this year’s board is no exception.

We are grateful for their leadership and excited to see the continued impact they will have on the next generation of students exploring careers in medicine.
