Last, but certainly not least, meet our third intern Nelson Wong, a member of the Class of 2028 at Rice University.
After college, Nelson plans to pursue a career in medicine, explore the world, and try new things! He would like to stay in-state in Texas or go to California for medical school. Ophthalmology interests him because even a small change in someone’s vision could have a huge impact on their quality of life.
Nelson hopes to gain meaningful patient interaction experiences, to immerse himself the world of Ophthalmology, to learn more about the tools and strategies used to solve health problems, and to see the decisions made in real time—all while being a part of the team that makes the clinic flow smoothly.
After conducting research and witnessing cataract surgery, Nelson was intrigued by the precision of the eye—how structures just millimeters wide could determine the sense of sight, independence, and quality of life. He wants to understand not just what goes wrong in eye disease but why, as well as interact with patients who are experiencing eye conditions firsthand.
While at FWEA, Nelson witnessed how every member of the team works together to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. From the front desk, technicians, and physicians, everyone plays an important role in creating a smooth experience for patients. Seeing this collaboration has shown him that being a great healthcare provider is more than diagnosis and treatment. Communicating clearly, building trust, showing empathy, and ensuring patients feel heard and cared for throughout their visit is just as important.
Nelson has found FWEA to be a lovely clinic where working alongside such supportive doctors, staff, and fellow interns has created an environment where he feels comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and continuously improving. It has reinforced his appreciation for the teamwork, communication, efficiency, and compassion that are needed to deliver exceptional healthcare. It’s also amazing helping people with their health and eyes- seeing how better health can help restore confidence and happiness.
During his downtime, Nelson enjoys the manga series “Hunter x Hunter.” A few of his Fort Worth favorites are Ampersand, Magnolia Street, and Teddy Wong’s, and his hobbies include basketball, running, and going to new coffee shops and restaurants.
