CHLLD Lab The Child Hearing, Language, Literacy and Deafness Laboratory supports families through research

Would you like to learn more about your child's speech and language skills? We know that some children with hearing loss have difficulty acquiring new vocabulary words and have difficulty with early reading skills, life phonological awareness. In this study, we will look at how vocabulary learning and phonological awareness develop together in children with cochlear implants as compared to children with normal hearing.

90 children ages 4-7 will be asked to participate in this study.

$50 gift cards are granted for participation in this study!

New publication alert from the CHLLD Lab! 📚

What happens when SLPs have an interest in trauma-informed practice, but translating that knowledge into everyday behavior-management decisions is still a challenge?

Our new article explores how SLPs’ trauma-sensitive perspectives compare with their scenario-based behavior-management decisions, highlighting an important gap between awareness and action.

Key takeaway: Knowing about trauma-informed care may not, by itself, be enough to change clinical practice.

We’re excited to share this work and contribute to the growing conversation about what trauma-informed practice can, and should, look like in speech-language pathology.

Hooray! So excited for our ELLA kids to be back with us this summer!

📣 Big news!

The ELLA Study has received continued NIH funding through 2031. We're excited to continue exploring language and literacy development in deaf and hard-of-hearing middle school students and to build on the important discoveries still to come.

Thank you to the children, families, and researchers who are part of this journey. We’re excited for what’s ahead!

Summer was a whirlwind! Stay tuned to see what we've been up to this summer in the CHLLD lab.

June kicked off with the Project INTERSECT students (10 students across TCU, Vanderbilt and SDSU) attending the Symposium on Research in Child Language Disorders (SRCLD) in Madison, Wisconsin. They had a great time hearing from leaders in the field of child language disorders, networking, and presenting their own work!

CHLLD lab friends, we need your help! We are looking for participants who are DHH and between 4 and 8 years old! Please lend your voice to our work (or send to someone you know who could help!) This is a study that can be completed virtually or we can come to you!

We are conducting a research study to better understand the experiences of families of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and how those experiences relate to children's language development. Our goal is to improve services and support for future families navigating hearing loss.

We are currently looking for:
✅ Children 4 years to 7 years, 11 months of age
✅ Children with hearing loss who primarily use spoken language
✅ Spanish-English bilingual children or English-speaking monolingual children

What participation involves:
Parent: One interview about your family's experiences
Child: Language activities and assessments in English and/or Spanish

Conducted at the Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic at TCU (Fort Worth), virtually, or at another mutually convenient location

All information you share will remain private and confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside the research team.
Every family's story is valuable and can help shape future research and clinical care.
If you think your family may qualify or would like to learn more, please scan the QR code on the flyer or click on this link:

At the beginning of this week, Dr. Lund had the chance to participate as a mentor in the ASHA Pathways program (and jog around the Rio area in Maryland!) at the ASHA offices. The program is designed to mentor early-career scientists in developing strong foundations for independent clinical research careers over the course of a year, and we kick it off developing 5 year plans, specific aims, and goals for research. Such a fun experience!
