🗞️ EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! 🗞️

New work from the Mathis Lab is out! 🎉

In our latest study, we asked a simple but important question: Can we tap into the body’s own nervous system to help control the inflammation that contributes to lupus?

Using galantamine, a drug that boosts communication between the nervous and immune systems, we found that long-term treatment in mice with lupus improved survival, lowered blood pressure, reduced kidney injury and scarring, and decreased lupus-associated autoantibodies.

Even more exciting, these benefits were seen after 14 weeks of treatment, showing that the protective effects we previously observed with short-term treatment can be sustained as lupus progresses.

Our work continues to support an exciting idea: treating lupus may not only be about suppressing the immune system—it may also be about restoring the body’s natural ability to regulate it. 🧠🫀🩺

Congratulations to first author Dr. Paromita Das-Earl and the entire team! 🎉👏🏾

So excited to welcome the newest postdoc to the Mathis Lab, Dr. Kayla Nguyen-Alley! 🎉

Kayla recently earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of North Texas, where her research focused on environmental exposures, inflammation, and lupus.

This one is extra special because Kayla first reached out to me years ago because of her interest in lupus research. I eventually had the privilege of serving on her dissertation committee, and now I get to serve as her postdoctoral mentor. Talk about full circle! 💫

She is committed, respectful, determined, and genuinely passionate about lupus research. I’m already so proud of her and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in this next chapter.

Welcome to the Mathis Lab, Dr. Nguyen-Alley! 💜

Closing out Lupus Awareness Month with a throwback purple pic. 💜

As both a scientist and advocate, lupus awareness is more than a month on the calendar for me. Every day, I have the privilege of studying the links between lupus, inflammation, high blood pressure, and kidney disease while working toward better treatments and outcomes for patients.

Today, I’m honoring the strength of those living with lupus, the families who support them, and the researchers, clinicians, and advocates dedicated to finding answers.

Awareness matters. Research matters. Patients matter.

We wore red today, but this work goes far beyond a moment. ✨

Our lab is committed to understanding cardiovascular disease in women and translating science into solutions. Proud to stand with , in color and in purpose. ♥️

Happy Holidays from the Mathis Lab!!

We enjoyed the holiday season and sharing our favorite things, including eating lunch together!! Everything was so nice!

As we close out the year, we are proud of our progress. The lab has come along great! Take a look! We are also proud of Paromita for being our ‘Goal Digger’ for 2025. That means she accomplished the most team goals on the MatLab BinGoals game we started early in the year.

This week we are challenging ourselves to write new attainable goals, both personally and for the team. We will keep pushing in 2026!
We’re speaking it… it will be a productive year for us!!

Two years of service complete! 🎉

I have learned so much about large conference programming through this committee. A lot goes into planning Kidney Week, and the ASN has a masterful team to get it done. Grateful for the experience.
