After trauma or a significant loss, people often hear phrases like “you should be fine by now” or “just try to move on.” Those pressures can add to the pain. The truth is, trauma changes the brain, the body, and the story you tell yourself. That change can often show up as:

- Chronic anxiety
- Hyper-vigilance
- Numbness
- Emotional shutdown
- Recurring grief
- Resentment
- Shame
- Difficulty trusting
- Problems connecting
- Feeling unsafe

At CCFAM, we understand your emotional, mental, and physical hurt. Individual counseling allows you to go beneath the symptoms and rebuild your sense of safety, identity, and future.

It’s the middle of the night. I’m asleep in the passenger seat when something jolts me awake. For a split second, my body is convinced the car is spinning. My heart races. My muscles tense. I brace for impact … even though nothing is happening.

Minutes pass before my body settles ... but the feeling lingers.

And what’s harder to explain is this: it’s not the only time something like this has happened.

Decades ago, during a major snowstorm, my father and I were driving home from a trip. Under normal circumstances, we would have waited for the roads to clear. But because I needed surgery for an injury, we pressed forward on slick, dangerous roads.

Even now, years later, my body still remembers that night.

Trauma doesn’t always stay in the past. Sometimes, it continues to show up in your body, despite the passing of time.

Most people don’t notice when their thinking starts to shift. It happens gradually. A stressful season stretches on longer than expected. Relationships feel harder to navigate. Responsibilities pile up faster than you can manage them.

Over time, certain thoughts begin to repeat themselves. They feel true in the moment, and eventually, they start to shape how you see everything around you. What once felt manageable begins to feel overwhelming. What once felt hopeful begins to feel stuck.

These patterns are more common than people realize. They can show up in any stage of life, regardless of your circumstances, background, or level of support.

Be honest: Have you struggled with thoughts like these?

"It's Too Hard"
- To deal with everything going on in life
- To manage responsibilities
- To navigate relationships
- To keep up this breakneck pace

When life feels heavy for too long, even simple things can start to feel difficult. Tasks that once felt routine begin to take more energy. Conversations require more effort. You may find yourself avoiding things you used to handle with ease.

This thought often develops when your capacity has been stretched without enough space to recover. Instead of seeing specific challenges, everything begins to blur together into one overwhelming weight.

Keep reading today’s blog post to learn about these other self-defeating thoughts and how they impact our emotional health:

“It’s Not Fair”
“It’s Not What I Want”
“It’s Not Worth It”
“I’m Too Tired”
“I’m the Only One”

Life often holds both positive and negative events at the same time. In those moments of tension, trouble, or transition, I have noticed how easily self-defeating thoughts can begin to take hold.

Thoughts like “It’s too hard” or “I’m the only one” can hit close to home. And if they go unchecked, they can quietly steal our ability to see what is still good, meaningful, and hopeful around us.

I was recently reminded of this in a very real way.

We lost our daughter’s beloved cat after it was attacked by a large dog. The grief was immediate: grief for our daughter, for the loss, and for the memories tied to something so loved. And almost just as quickly, the thought surfaced: “It’s too hard.”

But awareness began to shift as we reached out to friends for support and prayer.

In those connections, we were reminded that we were not alone, and that even in hard moments, there is still space for comfort, perspective, and hope.

Although grief comes in many forms, the thoughts that follow often sound familiar. They can feel true in the moment, but don’t always reflect the full picture.

This month’s blog explores some of the most common self-defeating thoughts and how recognizing them, and not facing them alone, can begin to change how we respond. Click to read more: https://conta.cc/4uNJUeT
