Rest isn’t supposed to be a reward for running yourself into the ground.
Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that rest had to be earned. Stay busy. Keep going. Do more. Then maybe you can take a break.
The problem? Your nervous system doesn’t work that way.
In my newsletter, Rest Was Never a Reward, I explore:
✨ Why rest can feel undeserved
✨ How childhood messages shape our relationship with rest
✨ Why slowing down can feel uncomfortable
✨ The role of regulation and repair in learning to rest
Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t know how to rest—it’s that you learned rest was something you had to earn.

🌿 A little more about your therapist Lilyan Fowler...
Most people know me as a counselor. Some know me as a gardener, coffee enthusiast, and plant lover. Fewer know that I'm also a double amputee.
Life doesn't always go according to plan. I've faced challenges I never expected, and while I wouldn't have chosen every part of my journey, those experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding joy along the way.
One thing I've learned is that overcoming adversity isn't about being fearless or positive all the time. It's about continuing to grow, even when life looks different than you imagined.
For me, that growth often happens in the garden—watching tiny seeds become something beautiful reminds me that progress takes time.
What's something life has taught you through a difficult season? 💜

One thing about me as a therapist? 🌿
I genuinely love gardening.

There’s something healing about slowing down long enough to care for something, watch it grow, and eventually enjoy the harvest. It reminds me that growth takes time—and that rest, sunlight, water, and patience all matter too.

Self-care doesn’t always have to be big or complicated. Sometimes it looks like dirt under your fingernails and a quiet moment outside.

What’s something that helps you recharge lately? 💜

New article published ✨

You’re resting…
so why do you still feel exhausted?

In this article, I explore why rest doesn’t always feel restorative, how nervous system patterns contribute to burnout, and why slowing down can sometimes feel uncomfortable instead of calming.

We often assume exhaustion means we simply need more rest—but for many people, it’s more complicated than that.

You’re trying to rest…

but it’s not actually helping.

Your body slows down,
but your mind keeps going.
The thoughts don’t stop.
And somehow, you still feel exhausted.

This week’s newsletter breaks down why that happens—and what to do differently.

Fowler Counseling turns one year this month.

Starting and growing this space has stretched me in ways I didn’t fully expect.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned—personally and professionally—it’s this:

Just because something feels uncomfortable doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

Sometimes it means you’re building something new.

I’m grateful for everyone who has been part of this first year.

Uncomfortable doesn’t always mean something is wrong.

Sometimes it means you’re stepping outside of what your system is used to—
and that can feel unfamiliar before it feels safe.

Growth doesn’t always feel good in the moment.
But that doesn’t mean it isn’t right for you.

What’s something in your life right now that feels new?

So you slowed down… and it still didn’t feel like rest.

Instead, your mind kept going. Your body felt tense. And the discomfort didn’t go away.

This isn’t uncommon.

When your system is used to constant activation, it doesn’t automatically shift just because you stopped moving.

I’ll be talking more about this in this week’s newsletter.

You finally slow down…
and it still doesn’t feel like rest.

Your body is sitting still—
but your mind is still going.

The thoughts show up: “I should be doing something.”
“This is a waste of time.”
“I’ll rest later.”

So you try to push through it…
or you give up on resting altogether.

If that sounds familiar, it’s not random—
and it’s not because you’re doing it wrong.

Sometimes the issue isn’t whether you rest…
it’s whether your system knows how to receive it.

Which part of this hit the most for you?
