Some careers follow a straight line. Dr. Robert Connaughton's didn't — and that's exactly what makes him the surgeon he is today.

Before medical school, Dr. Connaughton served five years in the US Army as a surgical technician. That experience — working alongside surgeons before ever becoming one — gave him a perspective on patient care that you can't learn in a classroom.

He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, completed his internship and residency at the University of Oklahoma, and received his certification in General and Peripheral Vascular Surgery in 1999.

What followed was over two decades in private practice — 20 years serving patients in Denton, Texas, and four years in Maui — before returning home to North Texas to bring that depth of experience to patients in Allen and the surrounding area.

Board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Member of the American College of Surgeons, Texas Medical Association, and Denton County Medical Association.

Dr. Connaughton believes that surgery is daunting — and that acknowledging that matters. His approach is built on compassion, personalized care, and the kind of bedside manner that helps patients feel less alone in a difficult moment.

We're proud to have him back to North Texas.

There's a version of surgical care that feels distant.

Long waits. Rushed appointments. A different face every time you come in. The sense that you're moving through a system rather than being taken care of by one.

That's not what we built.

North Texas Surgical Specialists was built around a different idea — that advanced surgical care and genuine patient attention aren't mutually exclusive. That you can have access to one of the most experienced surgical teams in Texas and still feel like someone actually knows your name.

Today, that looks like:

20+ locations across Texas
— so care is never far from where you live

25+ board-certified surgeons across every major surgical specialty

20,000+ patients who have trusted our team with their care

6,400+ surgeries performed with the highest standards of precision and safety

One of the most advanced robotic surgery programs in the country
— powered by the da Vinci® Surgical System

But the number that matters most to us isn't any of those.

It's the patient who came in not knowing what was wrong — and left with a plan, a team, and a reason to feel confident about what comes next.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to. Every location. Every surgeon. Every time.

Most people who live with chronic digestive problems don't describe themselves as sick.

They describe themselves as careful.

Careful about what they eat before a flight. Careful about which restaurants they choose.
Careful about sitting near the aisle. Careful about how far they stray from a bathroom they trust.

And at some point, careful became the baseline. The new normal. Something they stopped questioning.

But here's what's worth understanding:

Digestive symptoms that consistently affect how you plan, travel, eat, or socialize aren't a personality trait. They're clinical information.

Conditions like irritable bowel disease, chronic constipation, colorectal disorders, GERD, gallbladder dysfunction, and motility issues all have one thing in common — they're frequently under-reported because patients have normalized years of discomfort.

By the time many patients see a specialist, they've been managing symptoms alone for three, five, sometimes ten years.

The body rarely creates new problems without signaling them first. Most people just learn to work around the signals instead of investigating them.

If your digestive system is quietly running your schedule — that's the signal worth paying attention to.

A lot of people put off surgical consultations for the same reasons:Not enough time.

Hard to get away from work.
Not sure if it's "serious enough" to make an appointment.
Not ready to sit in a waiting room for something that might be nothing.

Here's something worth knowing:You can meet with an NTX surgeon without leaving home.

Virtual visits are available — so the first conversation doesn't have to mean rearranging your entire day.

If you've been sitting on a symptom, a diagnosis, or a question you haven't found the right moment to ask — this is a low-barrier way to start.

Because getting answers shouldn't be harder than the problem itself.🔗

This is what treating the condition — not just the symptoms — can look like.

Bariatric surgery isn't right for everyone. But for patients whose health is being significantly affected by weight-related conditions, it can be one of the most meaningful medical decisions they make.

If you've been managing symptoms without real progress, it may be worth having a different kind of conversation.

There's a moment a lot of patients describe the same way.

Not the day of surgery. Not even the consultation.

It's the moment they finally said it out loud — to a doctor, to a family member, to themselves:
"I need help with this."

For many people, that moment takes years to arrive. Not because they weren't struggling, but because they'd spent so long being told — directly or indirectly — that this was a willpower problem.

It isn't.

Bariatric surgery doesn't take the easy road. It takes the medical one — addressing the hormonal and metabolic factors that make sustained weight loss so difficult for so many people.

Patients who pursue it often describe a shift that goes far beyond the scale: more energy, better sleep, reduced medications, and the ability to do things they'd quietly stopped doing.

If you've been wondering whether this conversation is worth having — it is.

“It’s probably just the BBQ.”

Sometimes it is.
And sometimes… it’s not.

Heavy or greasy meals can trigger gallbladder problems, worsen reflux, and make underlying digestive issues much harder to ignore.

The problem isn’t one barbecue plate.
It’s when the same symptoms keep repeating long after the meal is over.

Your body usually gives subtle warnings before bigger problems develop.

If certain foods consistently leave you uncomfortable, it may be worth getting evaluated instead of simply avoiding the menu.

Freedom looks different to everyone.

For some, it’s a backyard full of family.
A long weekend on the lake.
Kids running barefoot outside.
Fireworks after sunset.

The older we get, the more we realize freedom also lives in the everyday things we sometimes take for granted — health, mobility, time with people we love, and the ability to keep showing up for them.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and joyful Independence Day. 🇺🇸

Most health problems don’t get ignored because people are careless.

They get ignored because:
life is busy, symptoms seem manageable, and there’s always a reason to wait a little longer.

Until “a little longer” turns into months.

Your body is usually honest long before people are ready to listen to it.

Not every path to medicine starts in a hospital.

Before becoming a surgeon, Dr. Travis Corgan worked as an electrical engineer at Texas Instruments — a background that shaped the precision, problem-solving, and attention to detail he brings into surgery today.

Born and raised in Plano, Texas, Dr. Corgan eventually followed a different calling: returning to school to pursue medicine and later completing advanced surgical training at Cleveland Clinic Florida and the University of Utah Health.

Now back home in Texas, he’s proud to serve patients across the DFW area with a thoughtful, patient-focused approach to care.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Corgan enjoys reading, weight-lifting, traveling, and spending time with family — the things that keep life balanced beyond the operating room.

At NTX, we’re proud to have physicians whose experience goes beyond medicine alone — and whose care is grounded in both skill and perspective.
