As we like to say “Head down is not enough."

The real origin of the Spinning Babies name is from the movements babies have to make as they navigate our pelvis.

We call theses the cardinal movements: Engagement, Descent, Internal Rotation, Extension, External Rotation, and Expulsion

And these are guided by how toned and balanced the tissues in our pelvis and surrounding body are relative to one another.

But that’s not all.

Since those same tissues guide the baby into the position they will start labor from, having body balance can actually promote a more favorable beginning position for birth, specifically we’re talking about having the baby Left-occiput Anterior (LOA).

Starting from LOA makes it simpler for the head to flex into the chest and for the baby to rotate to face towards mom’s back as the birth spiral commences.

Result? Smaller head circumference, more even pressure on the cervix, smoother thinning and opening, shorter and possibly more comfortable labor and smoother birth!

This is more than just going from head up to head down. This is about aligning for a hopefully easier birth experience.

And my personal favorite bonus, the class includes how to move during labor if baby needs additional space in moving down and out. Now how cool would that be to actually know why certain movements are helpful at certain times during labor?

I sometimes hear students in classes say their baby is “Breached”

Just a point here on vocabulary

Breached is what is done to Castle Walls.

Breech is a position where the baby is head up in the pelvis.

One can be resolved with body balance, acupuncture, chiropractic, and may even be able to be birthed vaginally.

The other requires siege equipment (and possibly involves Monty Python 😉).

Thank you for your attention, you may now resume scrolling.

(Yes I know most folks probably know this, but it always cracks me up).

Yes, girl, you are OK, even in the midst of this storm.

Who resonates with this?

We can hear our better nature quietly murmuring in the background- but we are too caught up in our own mental storyline to actually listen?

Yeah, this one comes up all the time in Mommy Sangha- which is one of the reasons we need the Sangha- the community.

Gradually- with practice- we learn to hear and believe in our own gentle, basic goodness inside- the one we were born with.

This is why we need our Mommy tribe and we need the mirror of those around us- because we’re all dealing with some inner gremlin who is out shouting the kinder part that’s saying ‘give yourself a break’

So, give yourself a break, lady. It’s probably not as bad as you think it is.

Being curious about labor is possibly THE most important mental shift we can make.

Instead of being sure we know how things are going to unfold, feel, be, we could take the attitude of “what is going on here?”

This means not falling into fears and preconceptions and assuming that we know what our exact experience is going to be, but instead really exploring what we actually feel going on in the moment. Investigating each sensation like a scientist might when conducting an experiment.

What do the early contractions feel like? How does our mind react? What stories are we telling ourselves?

This is more than just “trusting our bodies” there is an internal understanding we can gain if we take the lens that each sensation is information rather than endurance.

The female physiology is biologically designed for birth, on a biomechanical and hormonal level. And we might never have actually given ourselves permission to listen to this inner wisdom. To make our own, authentic choices, in whatever pathway we want. Medical, spiritual and mental. When we get curious we are able to bring our mind and body together in the birth experience.

I’m not talking about an airy fairy ungrounded la la la experience. This is primal, intimate, powerful and also ordinary and profound at the same moment. But learning to work WITH whatever we encounter completely changes how we are able to work with it.

This is why I love exploring sensations and positions with pregnant folks.

First official Om Births Teacher training reunion in the books!

There are moments when you realize just how much the work you've been doing had impacted things. We had graduates from 2016 all the way to current cohorts all sharing their passions and insights from their respective trainings

And discovering they were all part of the same yoga family!

Im beyond humbled to see them all together.

Training dates are set for the 2027 cohort and registration is opening soon.

If you're interested, drop your name on the waitlist (Birth workers welcome too!) That'll be the first group to hear when spots open up.

And if you're curious but not sure, DM me and let's talk. I'd love to see if this is the right addition to your understanding.

What if your ego isn’t actually the problem?

That’s the question we found ourselves sitting with at a recent Mommy Sangha gathering.

Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is stop trying to get rid of a part of ourselves and get curious about what it’s trying to protect.

A baby’s position is important, but it’s not a one shot picture.

Bodies move. Babies move. Pelvic spaces change depending on posture, muscular balance, gravity, breath, and the stage of labor.

Your baby doesn’t settle into one position just because you lay on your back for 5 minutes. This is cumulative effort.
The purpose of positioning work is not to micromanage your baby into the “perfect” position.

It is to notice patterns, create space, restore balance where possible, and give both bodies more options.

We are made of an internal network of muscles, ligaments, organs, bones, and vessels. And balancing that network helps restore the original space that worked for us in labor and birth- and as a side note, in our overall physical health!

We are supporting physiology, not wrestling it into submission.

It’s the actual key to being ready for labor and birth.

Being able to work with uncertainty.

Not balancing your body’s tissues- though that’s important.

Not being able to focus and relax your mind- though that too is key.

And not even ensuring your baby is in the right position, or securing the best support/hospital/provider- although all of that will definitely have a huge impact!

The key is being able to work with uncertainty- because we never quite know how labor is going to unfold- but we do know that whatever happens we want to make informed, and centered choices in the moment.

And that’s why being able to work with not knowing is so important. We won’t know everything. But we can know that we are able to make the best decision we can with what we do know.

And we can give ourselves grace for not knowing what we don’t know- or didn’t know at the time.

Most of the time when we hit uncertainty, we try to find an answer. We try to plan ahead so we don’t encounter that “I don’t know” moment. But in birth this isn’t possible.

Even the smoothest labors have moments of doubt, of fogginess, of not knowing exactly when or what is happening. And those are the moments when we have to trust that we will make the best choice for us and our babies in the moment.

But if we freeze, if we cede control to someone else- then we set the stage for feeling disempowered- and possibly for trauma.

This is why when I teach we talk about sitting with the strong feelings, with the doubt, and learning to be gentle with it. Finding our edge not just physically, but maybe mentally too- in a safe space where we can hold our own patterns and be honest about what we want and need.

This is why Om Births teaching is more than just movements for birth and making pregnancy more comfortable. It’s about making friends with our deeper selves, and trusting we can be prepared for whatever comes- in labor, or parenthood.

This was an amazing conversation we got into recently at our weekly Mommy meditation community!

What makes something have meaning and be purposeful, and what makes it just be a chore?

Ultimately, it’s how we bring our attention and intention to whatever the activity is.

Everyday actions can become more meaningful (and dare I suggest fulfilling) if we make them something ritualistic rather than checking off a to-do list.

Just a thought, how could something like feeding your baby, become a ritual? Or doing laundry? Or bedtime?

And how might that change our internal monologue around it?

What rituals have you created in your life? Do you wish there were more?

Mommy Sangha meets every Wed 1-1:30. FREE, just join through the website.

Hot take: teaching people about birth by beginning with pain is backwards.

Before we talk about “getting through contractions,” we should be talking about what the uterus is doing, how oxytocin behaves, what helps the pelvis create space, how the nervous system responds to perceived danger, and why environment matters.

Pain is part of the conversation. It should not be the entire framework.

When you understand the process, birth becomes something your body is participating in, not simply something happening to you.

HypnoBirthing begins tomorrow, August 6, Online with 1 in-person session at Illuminated Birth in Acton.

Next 5 week series starts Sept 24th
