Recent data from the 2025 AMTA Consumer Survey provides encouraging insight into the evolving role of massage therapy.

30% of clients say their most recent massage was primarily for relaxation and stress relief. In contrast, 49% sought massage for medical or therapeutic purposes, including pain relief, injury rehabilitation, chronic stiffness, soreness, migraines, and general wellness support. Additionally, 71% of massage consumers used sessions for a health or medical reason at some point in the past year.

This data shows an interesting shift: more people are turning to massage therapy as a valuable part of their health care.

An impressive range of modalities and specialties are available to meet these needs, from Swedish techniques for relaxation, to deep tissue and myofascial work for pain management, sports massage for athletes, prenatal care, neuromuscular therapy, and rehabilitation focused sessions.

By continuing to develop your skills and expand your offerings, you can reach even more clients and create meaningful impact in your community, and grow your practice at the same time.
