"Through an open field to the far tree line, walk into the woods and look for a path on your right, then walk about 50 yards down the path". Those were the directions from the local woman out walking her dogs on Davis Point Road in Cushing, Maine. There we found the Davis Family Cemetery, just recently rediscovered after years of obscurity and neglect. In the cemetery are 26 headstones belonging to 4 generations of the Cornelius Davis family. Cornelius died 24 Aug 1845.

Joshua and Hannah Bradford were killed by Abenaki Indians on 22 May 1758, at their home in Meduncook (now Friendship), Maine. Joshua was pounding corn and failed to hear the warning shot from the nearby fort on Garrison Island. The Indians entered, killed, and scalped Joshua, Hannah, and toddler son Winslow. Two other sons were taken captive while their daughter carrying her infant sister made it safely to the Garrison. We recently identified this beautiful home as the homestead of Joshua and Hannah. Also pictured is Garrison Island, only accessible at low tide.

In 1849, James Oxley Spurr and his son George sailed from New York on the ship Orpheus, and traveled around Cape Horn to San Francisco in search of gold recently discovered at Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento, California. The two were brutally attacked by a grizzly bear. James Oxley Spurr died at Sutter’s Fort on 15 Oct, 1849. His son George, who lost an arm in the attack, eventually returned to Boston. He wrote "The Land of Gold: A Tale of ’49" in 1881 about their experiences as pioneers in search of fortune during the California Gold Rush. I was able to find a first edition copy of the book in 2017, a family treasure secured for future generations

Captain Jacob S. Davis was Master of the Bark Fredonia, owned by Charles W. Dabney of Boston, MA, and traveled between Boston and Fayal, Azores with both cargo and paid passengers. He was awarded a solid gold pocket watch by Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1866, for his efforts in rescuing nearly 300 passengers from the foundering Gratitude of Liverpool, and delivering them safely to Boston.

A recent research project led us to Glamis Castle in Angus, Scotland, ancient seat of the Clan Lyon. Drilling down, we discovered that my client's ancestors did, in fact, live in the castle for many generations. Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon (HM the Queen Mother) was born there in 1900.
