The answer is the technique.

My minimally invasive procedures use tiny 2–3 mm incisions with minimal disruption to the surrounding soft tissues and no permanent hardware — no plates, screws, or pins sticking out of the toes.

How long does minimally invasive hammertoe surgery actually take? 👣

For a typical single hammertoe correction, the surgical portion usually takes me approximately:

⏱️ 3–6 minutes.

That’s from the first incision until the final dressing is applied.

For many patients, that number is surprising—but speed itself isn’t the goal.

Every hammertoe is different, and the amount of time needed can vary depending on the deformity and the correction required.

One of the philosophies that guides me in surgery actually came from legendary basketball coach John Wooden. 👣

“Be quick, but don’t hurry.”

I’ve always thought that was one of the best descriptions of good surgery.

Being quick means being prepared.
Being efficient.
Knowing what comes next.
Making every movement intentional.

Hurrying is different.

Hurrying means rushing, skipping details, and potentially increasing the risk of mistakes.

My goal is never to finish a surgery as quickly as possible. It’s to perform every step efficiently and intentionally while giving the details the attention they deserve.

After every surgery, I replay the procedure in my head. 👣

The question I ask myself is:

“How could I have done that better?”

Not faster for the sake of being fast. Better.

Sometimes the improvement is something small—better instrument positioning, better hand placement, fewer unnecessary trips to the back table, or more efficient use of fluoroscopy.

Those details may seem insignificant during a single procedure.

But over hundreds and thousands of surgeries, small refinements add up.

The goal is always the same: create a toe that looks natural, functions well, and fits comfortably into shoes.

And if I can continue refining how I get there, the patient ultimately benefits.

Is your hammertoe flexible or rigid? 👣

That difference can matter when determining how it should be corrected.

A flexible hammertoe still has some movement within the joints. These deformities may be easier to correct because the toe hasn’t become completely fixed in its abnormal position.

A rigid hammertoe is different. The toe has become fixed, the joints no longer move normally, and additional work may be necessary to restore alignment and function.

That’s why there isn’t one hammertoe procedure—or one surgical time—that applies to everyone.

The treatment should fit the deformity, not the other way around.

What if hammertoe surgery didn’t require pins sticking out of your toes—or screws left inside them? 👣

Modern minimally invasive hammertoe surgery can look very different from traditional open surgery.

For many of my patients, that means:
