Opioid overdose can happen to anyone — including people using prescription pain medication as directed, and it can happen fast. Knowing the signs and having naloxone (Narcan) on hand can save a life.

Signs of an opioid overdose: Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing. Blue or gray lips/fingertips. Unresponsive to voice or touch. Pinpoint pupils. Gurgling or choking sounds.

What to do: Call 911 immediately. Administer naloxone if available. Stay with the person and monitor their breathing until help arrives. Most states have Good Samaritan laws that protect people who call for help during an overdose.

Naloxone is available at most pharmacies without a prescription in many states, and free through many local health departments and community organizations.

Let's clear up a common misconception: methadone is not "replacing one addiction with another."

Methadone is an FDA-approved medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Taken as prescribed under medical supervision, it works by reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings without producing the intense high associated with opioid misuse — allowing people to stabilize, hold jobs, care for their families, and rebuild their lives.

Decades of research show medication-assisted treatment, including methadone, significantly reduces opioid-related overdose deaths and improves long-term recovery outcomes. Stigma is often the biggest barrier standing between someone and treatment that works.

If you have questions about methadone or other MOUD options, talk to a licensed opioid treatment program or your healthcare provider.
