Pain language matters.

The way clinicians explain pain can shape how patients think about movement, safety, and participation.

Messages like “don’t move if it hurts,” “your body is broken,” or “just push through it” may be well-intended, but they can also make movement feel more threatening, especially for patients already navigating fear, sensitivity, or uncertainty.

The goal of pain education is not to minimize what a patient is feeling. It is to help patients understand pain through a more accurate, evidence-informed lens so clinical conversations can support movement, confidence, and better decision-making.

In the upcoming live webinar Pain Neuroscience, Darren Smith explores how pain education can support clinical reasoning and help clinicians communicate about pain in ways that are practical, patient-centered, and easier to apply in real-world care.
